i have a 98 v-max and was removing the pipe only to hear something large rattling around inside the pipe and what sounded like small pieces of it in the can. with a light i can see what looks like part of a baffle in the main pipe loose and moving around. what effects would this have and what damadge could it cause ?

I've got a '97 Vmax, just picked it up three days ago. I was riding and noticed a dramatic decrease in power, only to let off the throttle and have it come right back - it did than more than a few times.
It just did it 30 min ago but I held the throttle, then the pipe popped off of the 2 into 1 collector. I pulled the pipe off and can hear something rattling around in there, I'm guessing some sort of baffle that's come loose.
I'm assuming I'm going to have to get a section of the pipe cut out, remove the piece floating around in there and then have it welded back up. Does anyone have any other ideas or solutions ?
