Bought a 2000 SRX 700 with engine troubles!
Hey guys, new to the site, and yamahas. Bought this 2000 SRX today knowing it had engine trouble. The guy I bought it off was told that a bearing had let go in the bottom end. Took all the jugs off today and found cyl.3 all chewed up! So how do I go about repairing this? Is a replacement engine in order? Or is there any hope left for this motor? Any help and comments are greatly appreciated! Here are some pics...

That is a hideously dirty 2000 SRX, not a 2002.

yea 2000,,big pics wow, anyway how does the crank turn??
looks like connecting rod bearing went. kirkswims viper looks the same. there is a site member on the 4 stroke side with a good crank for sale. do not remember the name.
Get a good used crank and a replated jug from US Chrome or one of the other vendors along with at least 1 new piston, some people like to do a 3 at once so they know what they've got.I'm sure you know this anyway but new crank seals will be needed when the base goes back together to give some peace of mind. With that kind of pre detonation did the head get banged up too?I'd bet you could get most of the stuff your going to need on the classified forums.
While the engine is out go at the belly with some brake cleaner or some kind of degreaser and get that part looking good before you put the power plant back in.You can concentrate on cleaning the rest after the engine is back in and running as well as changing all those rusty nuts and bolts on the skis etc.........
If your going to do the engine work yourself ask as many questions as possible and we'll what we can to answer them, the work needed to be done to make that engine run again isn't really all that difficult. It's always good to learn how to do this kind of work so your not dependent on the dealers to gouge you on labor just the parts

Thanks for the advice! Do you think the crank case will be ok? Or will I only know that when its all apart? And as far as putting in a used crank, will anything need to be done to the crank case to accept the used part?fourbarrel said:Get a good used crank and a replated jug from US Chrome or one of the other vendors along with at least 1 new piston, some people like to do a 3 at once so they know what they've got.I'm sure you know this anyway but new crank seals will be needed when the base goes back together to give some peace of mind. With that kind of pre detonation did the head get banged up too?I'd bet you could get most of the stuff your going to need on the classified forums.

And yes, the head got all marred up, so probably will need one of those too.
Fixed the picture issue.

Parts
I got a great deal on OEM parts thru PortYamaha.com, saved like 80.00 compared to the local Yammi dealer. Oem is the best stuff.
That bearing may have just failed BUT make sure everything fuel wise is in order, like clean carbs, check jets. Id also pre-mix until your SURE that its getting the right amount of oil/gas...
The case should be just fine, you lost the rod bearing much better than the main BUT that being said Im sure that rod bearing contaminated the mains so like others suggested, get a low mileage crank ASSEMBLY with outer mains.
How many miles are on that sled? If around 4000 might as well buy the drive bearings because its due, both my SRX failed while riding.
While engine is out the SRX's are notorious for wire rub through underneath the engine. SO check them and either re-route or put some type of wire wrap to make sure no issues later.
Good luck and read up.

That sled is about the dirtiest I have ever seen. I would tear down that entire sled during the warm crappy weather and go through the entire sled, every bearing, bushing and seal. If you don't, you will probably be chasing problems season after season. I would diassemble that entire engine and inspect/measure every critical part. Have the crank rebuilt by a reputable crank shop. You'll be able to get it in top condition with many thousand miles of riding ahead. There are a lot of goor used OEM parts available. The people on this site are the best you'll find to help withthis project.

I hope you got a darn good price on that machine. It doesn't look like it has ever had the thought of maintenance blessed upon it. That project will keep you in the garage for a while. All the parts you need are in the classified section, just open that wallet up.

Holy crap...I was thinking the same thing. I went and looked at a perfect 2002 SRX the other day. 2000 miles, never outside, it was showroom and he wanted $2000. I would have bought it but somebody else just barely beat me to it.

I got it for 600 bucks, whether its a deal or not, I was helpin out a friend. And really its JUST dirty from when it got trailered back to my house, no cover for it. So it should clean up nice, dont worry guys it will be clean haha!
Get a hold of Bruce at www.cbperformanceparts.com. He will rebuild the crank for you. I'd bet if you send him the whole bottom end he would send it back ready to go in the sled. Maxdlx

Get that thing cleaned up by this weekend or i will come there and take the snowmobile free of charge and make sure it has a good owner.
I'd rather see your kids get neglected over these sleds... damn shame.
