my 2000 sxr 500 all of a sudden is not wanting to idle. it tends to die out, but first, the rpms go down to zero and it does not sound right. it normally sounds like banging on tin cans. when i throttle up it tends to bog and then dies. when i have the choke on, it works fine. i have changed the plugs but it did not make a difference. when i get it revving, it sounds awesome, the way it should. when i open it up at full throttle, there is no stopping it. everything else works well. do i need to clean the carbs? i just hit 4000 kms. any help?
I cleaned the carbs under the advice of many, but it is still doing it. when i flip the choke on, it runs normally, flip the choke off and then it dies again. anything? no problems when i am riding and no problems with throttle response, only at idle is when this happens.

Clean again! Make sure the pilot jets are really clean and blow out all the passages. Sounds like there is still debris in there!

you have something clogged/messed up w/the pilot circuit. i would take out the pilot jets again, and hold them up to a light, and see if you can see a deffinite clean hole thru them. also, take out the pilot screws and blow carb cleaner in thru those passages too, and compressed air. same thing w/jets. return the pilot screws to 1-3/4 turns out. there should be no reason for it to not idle. you telling me that it idles ok w/the choke on, tells me its lean on fuel, somewhere in the pilot circuit.
