Tryed to remove clutch from my '01 SX500 with impact wrench and proper clutch tool from "Pats Small Engine supply" - bent end of tool in shaft. I bought the one for $19.99 made in china they also sell one for $28.99. What am I doing wrong? Is it just soft steel?
very common. cheap steel. not heat treated.

i have bent my puller trying to get the clutch off a xt 700 an whoever owned the sled before me cut the motor out of the chassis to work on it an still hasn't got it off yet
take a grease gun and pump the inside of the hole on the primary full of grease.. then take and put the puller in.. it will take a lil effort to get it started b/c the grease will be creating resistance.. once you get a few threads started, go ahead and tighten like normal. clutch will pop right off. sometimes b4 the puller even bottoms out on the crank. simple hydrolics
btw you end up with a mess but it hasn't failed me yet, even on the most stubborn of primarys. i usually us it after i try it w/ just the impact b/c of the clean up, but it WILL work

I'll give it a try - thank for the help
Yep do as kidder said, works evrey time for me. grease and go, sometimes if you have a cheap puller you have to put some teflon tape on the threads to keep the grease in , to create pressure. Its easier if you tilt the sled on its side. If it doesnt pop right away give it a minute it will come.

I had the cheap puller ($19) from Pats as well, I brought it back and bought the $28 one. The $19 one bent right away, thats why I brought it back. I'm still waiting to hear if they'll refund my money on the cheap one. It's been a month, so I'm guessing its not going to happen. They didn't sound too hopeful. Anyway, I've learned my lesson, don't buy cheap tools.

tip the sled on side and add water its easier to clean after ...put tefflon on puller ..u cannot compress liquid so it will give the same result grease do

what do you do if you internal clutch threads are so stripped that your puller cant get a good "grip" on the threads?
fully load the clutch with grease ..take something that fit tight in the hole of the clutch something similar to the clutch puller but that doesnt go touch cranck and give a nice big hammer punch lolll...if its not really seize the pressure from the grease will pop out the clutch .. or go get a big tap to make new thread and again add grease or water till is full and screw a new bolts long enough to compress the stuff inside
