when yamaha went to the new "3D ignition" in 2001 or 2002, they started to fire each coil with a separate source from the CDI rather then firing all three coils simultaneously with one source from the CDI....
does any one know if all three spark plugs still spark at the same time (three times per revolution) or does each one spark at the precise moment required for that cylinder?...
If the latter happens, how does the CDI know which cylinder is which?...
I'm thinking the former, but hoping someone can chime in...
Does anyone have knowlege of this? thanks tj

the cdi only fires the cyl that is at tdc. on the mag there are the three trigger points for the pick up coil and another small trigger point that tells the cdi when number 1 is a tdc.

thanks, I see there are three trigger points on the flywheel of the mag 120 degrees apart.... but where is this small trigger point that tells the cdi when number 1 is at TDC ? thanks again tj

. on the srx's there are the three spots about a inch and 1/4 long. right next to one of those there is another spot about 1/2" long , this is the tdc reference. i'am not sure if this applies to the red head triples .

your info has been very helpful... I do believe you are correct, I don't recall seeing the short TDC reference strip... Perhaps the SRX's have more sophisticated timing?...
thanks..
