Hello all,
First post-first yamaha. I just bought this machine and have been cleaning and getting familiar with it. I have always had Cats(sorry)in the past. Any kind of maintainence that should be done over the summer? Are these machines known for any type of common problems? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You could check all the rubber hoses in the cooling system, specialy the one that goes from the cylinders to the water pump, and the one thats near the oil tank,on myExciter they have been rubbing against the brackets for the oil tank, and almost had holes in them.
Check the plastic thingies that the torsionsprings in the skid rests on,they could be worn out.Idling wheels, hyfax(?),tighten all bolts and nuts that has to do with the steering, coolant, chaincase oil,and if the chain is worn, change it out.Check bearings around the sled, and see if they are ok.
Most of theese things you have porbably been doing before on your Cats,so you are probably familiar with them

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Anything to do with the suspension? The rear shock seems spent. I got a bunch of parts with the machine. Cover,track,heads(2),cylinders,gauges,taillites,runners,carbs,Boggie wheels, headlites and many other parts. It runs like a beast compared to the old Cats I have owned.
Thanks

Yeah the old Exciters run like hell when they are working like they should, especialy with aftermarket tuning parts and such goodies.
If the rear shocks are original, you should consider changin them,or get them fixed.I have a almost brand new Fox zero Pro shock from a Polaris Switchback on mine, cant wait to ride it:)
How many miles on the machine?

service sled complete were it is new to you pull carbs clean pull out suspension and inspect service clutchs inspect all hoses and water pump belt.go over sled then you will know what you have.then have fun welcome

when you have the rear suspension out check the welds on the front scissor arm(1 that top of shock bolts 2)known for cracking and sometimes taking track out.

Water pump belt? I am new to liquid cooled machines.Sorry everything I have owned was fan and(sorry) air cooled. I am old school and just getting back into the sport. I bought a cougar last year and ran great last season. First ride this year boom-took out piston skirt. Took me a while to figure it out. Ran OK until it got hot and then the crack in the bottom end would open up. It died on my first ride this year. Cleaned the carbs started up then died after 30-45 mins. repeat about 6 times till I opened it up. Do I have to pull the skid to replace the shock? I am somewhat mechanically inclined but that seems rather challenging. It has a little over 4000 miles on it-kind of high but the price was right. Still a little nervous-the Cougar had under 2000 and it let loose on me.

Another thing. What is that tab in the front left nose of the sled (under hood)? It looks like something would slide in a bracket-maybe long discarded tool kit?
Can anyone tell me what the stock engage spring would be?Are they by colors like a Cat? This seems to kick in around 4200.Seems a bit high for me. Don't get me wrong it makes for an inpressive take off, but if I am towing kids on a taboggan-don't think they would like it!
I also think I am going to put the stock pipe on,which the previous owner gave me. The pipes that are on there now sound great put are a real ear ringer after a few minutes. I must be getting old!

pipes? exciters had single pipe, psi twin pipes maybe!clutch/jetting probably changed due to running twin pipe setup.you will need to go thru your clutches and carbs to find out how they are set up. if you put the stock pipe on it, it will be a slug!didn't the guy you bought it from tell you what changes from stock this sled was when you bought it?if not call him and question him oh, gold/green spring is stock. part number 90501-500f5

so just leave the exuast alone? No I did not really notice till he delivered it and saw the stock pipe with the other parts. It looks cool and sounds great but seems to get annoying-like the young guys call it BRAP!

supposed to get 4-8 tonight. Where are the zerks on the suspension? I was suprised to not see one on the lower speedometer housing. All I see are 2 on the front suspension. Any help?
