I lost a bearing on the drive shaft (PTO side) on my 2003 Viper ER. It failed and spit out the rollers. So I got all new bearings for the drive shaft and chain case. My question is on the chain case. The upper and lower bearings are installed with the rubber bearing seal facing the chain. The other side of bearing you remove the bearing seal (Rollers exposed). Service manual says to grease the bearing, I guess the cahincase seal holds the grease in. Should I pack the bearing or just light grease? The old bearings that came out were not too bad but were virtually dry. Seems odd to me that the bearing is left open on one side. Seems if it were open on chain side this would let chaincase lube oil the bearings, but figured they dont want debris from chain case getting into the bearing?

Thanks
Mark

the reason they put the seal next to the chain is to keep the crap out if you change oil all the time i would leave the seal the other way and let the oil lube it but if you do not change the oil put the seal towards the chain
