I have a 1993 Exciter with a brake that has lost most of its stopping power. I can grab a handfull of brake and it has very little effect in slowing the sled. Over the weekend, I disassembled the entire brake assembly and cleaned every part. The mechanism which turns the cable movement into moving the brake pad was free and not binding, the cable moves freely. Both brake pads (round pucks) were glazed and the rotor was glazed to almost a mirror-like surface. I polished the glaze off the brake pucks with a few quick passes over a sheet of 80 grit abrasive paper. I removed the glaze from both sides of the disc/rotor using a coarse scotchbrite pad in my die grinder tool. I polished the jackshaft and inside of the rotor so the rotor will slide freely on the jackshaft. I put the brake system back together and wil try it out this week. Any other suggestions or ideas on what I should check or try??
How worn are the pads? I had the same issue with my Phazer, I thought the pads looked good but bought some new ones anyway and I was suprised how worn down they were compared to the new ones. Swiched them out and adjusted the cable and it was good to go.

Phazer,
Thanks for the reply. The material on the brake pads is at least 1/8" thick. I try the brake out this weekend since I cleaned and deglazed the pads and rotor. I may be expecting too much from this brake since I am ued to the hydraulic brake on my 2000 SRX.
