Bought a '01 SX500 last year. when I got it I proformed routine maitenance checks and all appeared to be within service limits. Replaced top and bottom gaskets due to overheating and replaced missing motor mount. But there is one thing I can't seem to figure out. At around 5000RPMs a vibration noise starts. It sounds like two tin cans hitting each other very fastly. At first I thought it was one of the exhaust springs - found them to be ok. Then I thought it might be a loose bolt holding the body to the frame - tightened all I could see including the ones on the hood. No change in sound.
Has anyone has a similar problem with a vibration noise like this? I sure would appriciate your help. It's driving me crazy.
Thank you very much for your help.

sounds like you need to pull the primary apart and check all the rollers and bushings in it.

I checked all rollers and bushings several weeks ago. Cleaned everything real good and put back together. All rollers, weights and bushings appeared in good condition. Sled only has 1200 mile on it. Would bad bushings cause that noise?
Thanks for your help

Im having the same problem
same thing here....I was pushing my sled hard thru deep snow two weeks ago, and now I have what sounds like something rattling inside...sounds like the spring on the muffler or a loose screw, but its neither..Its also not the belt, cause you can still slightly hear it when the belt doesnt spin....If I listen closely, it sounds like the clutch area, Im actually taking it to a local shop today to take a peak at it, I will post the results..Pete

no problem
The shop is looking at it now...they are gonna give me an estimate..not sure If I will have repaired or not, it depends on the cost, and what it is..I do think its coming from the clutch though.....It sounds like a loose screw or nut, but doubt thats it..

Hold down pin on the clutch cover.
Bend the clutch cover to put tension on the pin

back from shop
shop looked at it, and said its the two bushings in the primary..you can actually wiggle the primary and it wiggles alittle..they said it should be tight on that shaft...so gonna need new bushings eventually......I really hope they are correct, and bushings would cause that rattling noise, im tired of putting money into this now...Pete
