Okay, so having purchased my 02 SRX last fall and having little to no experience working on sleds (rode them lots) I attemped my first power valve cleaning with the help of directions from this board. (had been getting the diagnostic code since day 1) All three valves were brand new as of last August due to a couple pull throughs. The sled is now in the shop running on two cylinders. Please tell me whether I've totally screwed up!
Pulled out the valves, soaked them in some older gas I had sitting around the garage, then used a scowering pad to get off most of the carbon and worked carefully with a flathed screwdriver to scrape off some of the hard stuff. I was careful not to do any damage. Go to put them back in and realize that I switched them up and didn't know which one went with which cylinder. First mistake? realizing there was no way of knowing I put them in, they all fit similarly so thought it was no big deal.
Next, went on to check the servo motor. Followed the directions, idled down to 900, motor jittered telling me the cables were too tight. after one adjustment where it seemed like the cables wouldn't loosen up enough, tried her out. While it was running great at mid and high end before the adjustment (despite the code) there was a noticeable improvement in low end but I was still getting the code. Went back and switched the one that was too tight to the other slot on the wheel. Adjusted again and everything seemed good.. Took it for a rip and no code! and great performance at all speeds.. seemed to be running smoother between idle and 5000 rpm.
I was really happy with the sleds performance and myself for a job well done! Next morning I start it up and take a ride towards the gas station. the pitch of the motor slowly changes until it gets louder and louder and noticeable loss in power.. turn around and limp home... it's getting louder still. check my exhaust, can't detect any holes. shut it off for an hour.. start it back up, it's still idling at 1700 or so but really loud and I notice pipe #3 is cold... load her up on the trailer and take it to the dealer, bruised ego and all... It has to be something I did! Any ideas?

well we weren't there so we don't know what you all did but from what your
saying doesn't seem like it,did you put the vales back in the right way not
upside down?(that wouldn't matter on running tho)valves are non specific
they can go in any hole.
the pitch probably changed because you lost a cyl. did you take a comp test?

could be simply a fouled plug as well....whats your warm up proceedure?

Okay, so got a call from the shop and it was only a hole blown in number three pipe. Warm up procedure? I usually let it run on half choke for the first minute or so until it will idle with no choke, give it five minutes or so, spin the track, and go.. anything I should be doing other than that?

nope, that sounds good.
SRX can be very hard on plugs during the warmup - but you have the right idea IMO
So the loudness was a hole in the pipe eh? wow

good thing you didn't run her long..

I would imagine a hole in the pipe would affect exhaust flow, but I didn't know it could do damage. It was only five minutes away from home so that's good I guess.

That cyl. will run leaner with an exhaust leak like that.
