Hello everybody. I know there is a lot of prior threads on this topic and i have doen a lot of searching, but there is one issue I am wondering about that maybe people have thoughts on. On the Viper, I want to install hand guards onto my Viper Mountain and I have looked into some different models (PowerMadd, OEM Yamaha, Acerbis so far).

My situation is that I recently installed new OEM Hot grips from yamaha onto my sled. Strangely, they were "shorter" than stock Hot grips (do not extend as far up the handle bar). In fact, they don't even up to where the old rivet is, falling a few cm's short. of course, they is just fine to me and others who have ridden the sled (including bro-in-law who has huge hands), because even these are really long.

So now i have a distance between my hand grips and my brake cluster (left grip) and throttle cluster (right grip). Since I've wanted hand gaurds for a while anyways, I though now is the time...

My Q.: Can i install any hand guard brackets inside that area, between the grip and those clusters? On left, will a hand guard bracket mount interfere with my brake? On right, wil it interfere with throttle?

I know many people just loosen those clusters up and move them out, towards the grips. Then they install the brackets inside of the clusters. Is that the proper/only way to do it? Has anyone installed the brackets on the outside as I've described? If so, how is it working? Does anyone have pics available? My application is for a Viper.

Thank you in advance.

I mounted mine in the spot you are talking about. I think it looks better when they are there. I didn't have to move the left side other than to have enough room for the mounting bracket in between the brake lever and the grip.(See pics) On the right side I had to move the throttle over quite a bit so that it would clear the bracket at full throttle. I don't notice a difference when riding but I have pretty big hands, someone with small hands might find the throttle is too far from the grip.(see pics)

edit: sorry for the bad quality pics, I had to shrink them quite a bit to make them allowed on this site.

I bought them off of a member of this site, he said they were like a powermadd knock-off, but they look identical to powermadd.

I've done both ways with my viper and currently have them mounted on the inside portion of the bar and prefer it over ryanryan's way, but both ways will work just fine. I am now using the ROX Billet Alum mounts and they tend to fit better on the insides of both the brake and throttle side. I had the PM mounts before and mounted them like above.

How did you move throttle over? I cant seem to find any bolts to loosen. :dunno:

bolt

maybe I shouldn't post here. I have a mountain max. it has a large #3 philips head screw underneath that tightends into the bar, and locks it in place. My 2 cents :letitsnow

ok, just had a peek at it. and I found that #3 Philips underneath. I"ll give it a shot....thanks a lot!

You can go both ways depending on personaen preferance. Picked up an 01 SRX this past spring and PO had them all jacked up. He took the parking brake lever off (and lost it) and was a ROYAL PITA opening hing/closeing hood as bars had to be in exactly the right place and hood still rubbed on the way by guards.....30 minutes de-funking them and all good now!

Those are RSI's that are missing the stickers. I have them in Red. I had to grind down my right side mount a touch to get the throttle lever to move over it.
