I have a 2000 mtn max 600 that I ride out my back door in the UP of MI. I don't trailer it or ride far from the house. I want to remove the oil tank and run premix. i also want to get ride of the air box. I realize The coolant bottle is attached to the oil tank and would need a re-mount unless i just got ride of it and kept an eye on coolant level, seems to always be close to the same level. Coils and cdi and mounted to air box and would need to be relocated. the reason I want to do this is for looks only. i want the area cleaned up of all the clutter but my question is: is it worth it. i do ride in powder mostly and understand snow ingestion is expensive so some quality filters would be a must. anyone else do this?

now why's that??? because i'm just about to put some k&n's on my 01 MM700. Is it not worth it or what??
Because yamaha did there homework on there air box's and unless your heavily modified you'll gain nothing and it'll be a jetting nightmare.

My buddy went to pick up a pretty thrashed 99 mm700, basically for the engine (he blew his 600- wanted to move up). When he got there and opened up the hood it was a twin 600.... and no air box, just two "can" foam filters. He was going to walk but the guy dropped the price to almost nothing, so he took it. Turns out its a Vmax 600, dropped in a 700 mm. Big hurkin pipe, no can, and no air box. Seemed to run fine to trailer it and get it home. He's been too pissed to get it out and ride it. Going to force him out Friday though. I'll let you know if it makes it "there and back again" and what it acts like.

Any suggestions on what to watch out for... the local yamaha guru told him "for a sled that cheap... just ride it like you stole it and sell it next fall."

I know guys do it but snow injestion is a concern, relocating the electronics. I heard it won't run good without carb work

No airbox...the test

Okay... have had his sled out twice now. It runs good. Havn't had any powder, so no comment on injestion. The first trip out we stopped about every mile for the first 10 miles and checked the plugs. A little wet and brown to black. It was smoky and obviously running rich... safe. Then he rode it hard the rest of the day. Granted, we were at anthony lakes and offloaded at over 7,000 feet.

He said it was boggy until about 6-7,000 rpm then it ripped and was very responsive. The 'Y' on the exhaust manifold and the big hurkin pipe don't fit in the MM chasis correctly and are kinda hodge-podged in there. Three of the 'Y' bolts fell out today (2nd ride) before he heard the difference and stopped. One bolt disappeared, but we installed 3 of 4 and took off again.

All was well until he dropped off a cornice into a bench and almost KO'd himself, bent the handle bars over the hood, and barfed up his knees pretty good. Other than that, sled made it back to the barn under its own power. Don't know what has been done to it... but for $800, it works good under these conditions.

Also exploded the crank case on an old Phazer today. WOW... aluminum chunks EVERY WHERE. Wow... never seen that one before. The ten year old said "It sounded and felt like I hit a huge rock, so I stopped it." Wow... I guess so. No rock though.

Anybody need phazer parts?

Just remember, crank needs oil... So If you run pre-mix, don't forget to feed the crank with oil aswell..
