I am looking at a 2004 viper and the guy told me it had 1100 miles on it. He also said that he put knew ski's on it because the carbs were shot and also he said a new fuel line because the other dried up. I didn't think that 1100 miles would require new skis and fuel line. The sled has a digital spedo on it and was wondering if there was any way of telling if he unplugged it then road 5000 miles and replugged it back in or somehow had the computer card changed back to 1100. I know ware an tear will show but some people can hide that really well. There any ideas about that? also he said that he had to re-enforce the a-arms because they kept bending is that common thing also on these sleds?

sounds like he went to evil bay and bought a low mile spedo for it or just flogged the crap out of the sled.
the arms do bend when you hit something with them.
skis do wear fast when you run on lots of snirt or gravel andthe track and clips would show this from excessive wear.
dried out fuel line might be from improper storage as my brother is still on the origonal on his 2002 viper.
this sounds like a sled to stay away from unless it is selling for under $500.00.

Fuel lines dried out???
In 5 years???
"Only" 1100 miles??
I have a 93 & a 94 Sled with OEM lines, that we run, no issues.
And, in fact I just picked up a 88 Exciter with 2100 original miles, ( and it looks it!! A one owner !! And it has all OEM lines, so it is 21 years old...!!
Something is not right with this "deal". !!
I would let someone else get "screwed" by this guy...JMHO!!

10 ft pole please.Seriously unless your getting an extremely good deal on this sled like to the tune of 4-$500 then stay away from it unless you can find a neighbor of his that might be able to substantiate his story.

The fuel lines can get wrecked from ethonel in the fuel today. I knew a guy with an 05 skidoo that caught on fire from cracked fuel lines. Lines aren't a big deal. Only way you can tell on how many miles are on it, is to take off the y pipe look into each cylinder. Pistions should have all the factory coated paint on them with 1100 miles, if not it probabily has 5-6k miles.
You did not tell us his asking price.. Take along a sledder friend and check out sled in person.. It is the only way to tell the shape the sled is in.. You can tell how many miles approximately are on with the condition of components.. If sled was abused it will show.. Check engine bay, track, skis, how the suspension works just by pushing down on the front and rear bumpers.. Check out compression and how well it runs.. They are nice trail sleds and can go many miles without a rebuild. I have 8000 on my 02 and it still has 120psi acrose the board..

Best of luck with your purchase and now that you've got it home put it the garage and really go through it from stem to stern. It's a long summer so if you want to know what you have then start by removing the skid and going through it piece by piece looking for any signs of wore bushing or broken welds. The best thing you could do is dismantle the skid and grease all the pivot points that have bushings but no grease fitting like the front shock upper and lower mounts and the 2 W arm lower mounts. In fact regarding the 2 lower W arm mounts Yamaha missed out on installing grease zerks there so if your handy with a drill and a tap you can save yourself $ by drilling the 2 L shaped brackets that mount the lower W arm to the rails and tap them for a grease fitting. That way you wont be replacing the bushings there every year just give them a shot of grease every so often.
Go through the front end and grease all the heim joints with a good quality spray lithium grease and check for any play in parts that shouldn't be there.
Keep searching post's here and I'm sure you will find any other areas that will need attention.

yup..the temper thingie.I remember a few years back when I was changing the track on my 600.Never done it ever before. It was a hot July day..like 30 C.Man did I ever go nuts and lose it that time.It wasn't so much taking out,but putting the track on and re-install the skid..wow..the words were flying and I think I nearly had a heart attack. Now I have done the track thing twice, but there are still some things that will set me off.I am learning a little more every time.I have learned a little that if a bolt ain't lining up after like 10 tries..walk away and try next day.But it is things like that will set me off..the simple things.Something that should take 1 minute, but takes hours to get right..I will go into explode mode.Wander sometimes if my wife will find me on the floor dead from a heart attack.I got so mad at something once, that my heart started racing and man did I feel like the big one was coming..scared me really good. Thanks to my old man for passing on that trait.
