I figured out I have a torn reed on a cylinder on my '03 Viper. There is a small (about a small fingernail size) piece missing out of the reed. I don't see that piece anywhere. Any ideas on where that piece could be? Any risk in replacing the reeds and starting it up? Also, any ideas on a good place to buy the reeds would be appreciated. Just stock Yamaha reeds are fine. Thanks!

Stock yammie reeds are hard to beat, that little piece you lost just got ingested through the motor ,no wories no problems.

My Dad's Venture (Viper style) had 2 reeds broken the same about the same as yours. When I put them on top of each other, the break in them was nearly identical. It was the top center petal on the outside cylinders. The top middle petal in the middle cylinder was also missing a small piece. I guess that's where the flow is highest. They had all lost some memory. I guess what I'm getting at is it's a good idea to replace them all while you're there. I think they're about $15cdn each.

Been there done that. The piece is long gone through the motor to never be found. Viper's are known to be hard on the reeds. I've noticed the top ones especially. They say reed spacer's help because it moves the reeds further back from the piston.

The picture below is the first one we had problems with. You can see how big of piece is missing. Others have just been like you say, fingernail chipped, at the tops of them. This was also for us a hard problem to figure out, but I did learn the symptoms so I'm good to go now.

hard starting, rpms drop if you keep the throttle in the same position too long, loss of power, smell of gas, gas in the airbox.
