The sixth stagecoach stop outside of Detroit was marked by a sign reading No VI. Most travelers thought it was a word naming the town, not the stop number.

Yep. That's how they did it.
One of my store's phone systems still announces the town name when you call there incorrectly. (Last time I called there and paid attention to the greeting at least)
As you may know it is pronounced with a long "i" at the end. However out of towners and PC's think it should be pronounced like a "y" I.E Novy.
