It's been 6 years since...........

6 years since I had my 700 Maxim running.Had it off the road for that long.Stored it in my mom's shed all these years.Tried starting it a few years back,but she wouldn't go.Bought a new battery about 6 years ago to,battery is finished..won't charge or hold a charge.
Mom is selling her place and my stuff has to go.Well today I decided to take the carbs off and do a cleaning.I knew that was the issue here.A little harder to take out then in a sled.The air box can't be removed and makes it hard to back the carbs off.Just forced the boots off the air box and unscrewed them from the carbs,then it was easy to get the carbs off the front boots.I knew putting the rear boots back on was going to be a challenge..I was right,but just a few swear words.
Anyways when I took the bowls off and saw what I saw...no wander it wouldn't go.Never in my life have I seen things so gummed up.The floats were hardly moving because the little plungers were stuck in position.The jets were solid coated.The bowls were filthy.Got everything apart and started soaking and cleaning.Had a lot of trouble releasing the float plunger's,but in time they started to release.Man were they stuck in there like molasses.Spent all day pretty well on cleaning and the outside of the carbs to.Put everything back and proceded to install the carbs again,tank and used a battery with booster cables to start the Bike.
Choked it and cranked for about 20 seconds and there was life.I can't believe I got the Bike started after all these years.I'll need some new plugs for sure and will pick up a new battery
I will be scrubbing and washing the whole bike and polishing her up to.Will check the fluids and take her for a little ride.Miss riding the Bike for sure.Will take it to the HWY and go for a boot even though I don't have it insured.I usually will go a couple of miles one way and turn around and open her up good..then sneak home quick before a cop catches me..lolll.
I may sell the Bike or keep it for some short runs maybe.
Learning about carb cleaning on TY has helped me here for sure.

i just worked on one exactly like it a few weeks ago ,,,changed the valve cover gasket and rear trans seal ....carbs are next ......you better hope you never have to but a valve cover gasket i paid 112 dollars for just te gasket not including the rubbers that go on the bolts ....strange that bike doesnt have a off position on the petcock ...so we added a inline one ...cause it sat over winter and slowly filled the oil with gas ,,,,when we drained it we got about 1 1/2 gallons of oil ...and it leaked at least a quart or more on the floor once it got thin enought it come threw the seal for the shaft drive ....and also when we pulled the fuel line the barb that goes into the petcock got stuck in the line so we epoxy`d it into the petcock ...sounds like the carbs are alot harder than our sleds ?? did you have to sync them when you put back together ?

I had the same thing happen with the barb,it pulled out with the line.I just pushed it back in.It is a snug fit and looks like it has an o-ring on the end that goes in.There is a tiny stop that is either punched or reamed over to prevent the valve from pulling out.I will just epoxy a couple of tabs around the outside of the barb where it meets the petcock.I think I should do that to..put a shut-off valve on the line.
I don't want to remove the covers,the valves were adjusted years back when I bought the Bike anyways.Only thing I had done to it was get rear tire replaced and had one of the front forks seal replaced because oil was coming out.I probably will invest in a front tire to.Don't know if I can replace the tire myself.I'll get the rim off and tire mounted first.Need a new battery also.
