hey i was just wondering if anybody could give me some tips about any engine updates or reliability issues with the 02 viper motors? i have mine apart and need to replace a burned piston and i was gonna take the bottom end out of the sled and thought that it would be a good time to maybe update or replace anything if need be. any suggestions? sled has 4400km on it blew up due to bad gas
Others may have more info, but from my perspective an incredibly solid motor.
Just do the normal checks replace any seals or bearings that need it. Be sure to clean any debris out of the crank and cases.
The water pump impeller shaft had a recall (don't know if it ever was official). So check that. Many of these bottom ends go well over 10,000 km.

which cylinder went down? i also would tighten up the free play on the oil pump cable, approx .050" or so smaller. make sure to clean out the jets and passages in the carbs real good too.

i have read some posts on here about the crank bearings being unreliable on the 02 motors. anybody know anything about this cus if so then i should change them when i have the motor out.
I have 12,000+ miles on an 02 with a new set of pistons and rings installed at 9500 miles. Run Amsoil interceptor in it since first tank of Yamalube was gone. I've had a Tempaflow on it since 3500 miles. No bottom end work at all. And it's been ridden HARD!! My son dragraced it on the maiden voyage with the new topend LOL!! Good oil and proper fuel with good storage in the offseason, ie. fogging the engine and Seafoam in the entire fuel system. That's what has worked for me.

I don't believe any trouble with reliability. I have an 2002 Viper with 9200 miles with the same crank. I have been modified with pipes since day one spinning 9300 RPM with CPR pipes. Went 780 BB at about 3000 miles. I have burned about 5-6 pistons for various reasons throughout the years. Same crank same seals. Same water pump too. Water pump never leaked or has never been apart.
