I just purchased a 2000 SRX 700. It has been modified somewhat. It has been strectched to 144 with a Hartman kit. It has a camoplast challenger finger track cut down to 1.25 inch. The stock 47 helix has been changed to a 50/44 with a yamaha white secondary spring. Previous owner mentioned it worked good on and off trail. I have never rode an SRX before(bought the sled a couple of days ago). It is geared 23/38 which should be stock(from TY tech). This is a 1.65 ratio. I am inclined to think that this is too much for the longer track. I am thinking of buying a a 40 T bottom gear. 23/40 gives a 1.74 ratio(also less rolling resitance). I also have a 21 tooth top gear. 21/40 gives a 1.90 ratio. Both these set-ups use a 70T chain. I do mostly cross country riding. 23/40 should still give decent top end. A couple of times a year we do some twisty bush trail riding. 21/40 could be a blast for this.Am I on the right track with the gearing? Any thoughts/experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Check to see if the drivers were swapped to 8 tooth. If so then 23/38 probably isn't too bad depending on what you are looking for. I'm running 23/42 in my srx with 144x2 track. With the 8's it ratios out to about a 2.06. Works great for how I ride the sled.
If you have the 9's in it then I'd certainly look to gear it down. Personally I like to set mine right in the 2.o range as they pull real hard off trail and will still pull a decent top speed.

23/40 for 9 tooth with a long track for trail riding works perfect..
Best thing about that is you can use the stock chain. All you need is a 40 tooth.

We run 2 144" piped + ported SXs as well as a 144" SRX. All 3 of these sleds have reverse and 8 tooth extroverts. One SX has a 1.5" track the other 2 sleds have 1 25" tracks. We ride on lakes and groomed trails with a bit of deep snow riding...we do not ride these sleds in high elevation[less then 2000'] or mountains.
Heres what I have found to be the best for the forementioned conditions.
SX 1: with the 1.5" is geared[23/39] to give a corrected[for the 8 tooth drivers] 1.91:1
-sled pulls great but starts to loose out on speed at about 1000' out to the other SX
SX 2: with 1.25" is geared[24/38] to give a corrected[for 8 tooth drivers] 1.78:1
-sled is probably the best combination of acceleration and top end speed[our quickest and fastest trail sled. [1000 feet and more]...hammers my SRX![lighter,no power valves to clean, but does not get the SRXs gas mileage]
SRX : with 1.25" is geared[25/38] to give a corrected[for 8 tooth drivers] 1.71:1
-I have geared it a little higher to try and keep a higher top speed but has not worked out so I am going to go to 1:78 this season
If you are going to ride primarily off trail and or mountain riding you will need to go over 2.00:1
