I just bought a 1997 SX 700 and want to get a new Yamaha belt, but the choices are confusing:
8CH-17641-00
or
8dn-17641-00
or
8dn-17641-01
or
local dealer recommended I just get an 89L!
Basically stock sled with studs and a can for aggressive trail riding.
Help, what's right???

8dn-17641-00 is the correct belt. The 89L is softer.

97 sx the 8ch belt is the correct one, but the 8dn belt is far more durable and will fit. There was a small clutching change to make the 8dn work better, and according to Yamaha the difference between the 00 and the 01 belt was a different finish process, the belts are speced the same

I just looked it up on the Microfiche, the 97 700sx, the microfiche specs the 89L and says that it (89L) replaces the 8CH. But for the 98 700sx, the belt it specs is the 8dn and says that the 01 replaces the 00. Interesting, I always thought the 98 and 97 were the same as far as the belts go.
have your local dealer check the technical updates from 98 for specs on clutching to change to the 8dn belt. i have the info somewhere, i will post it if i locate it.

the 89l belt did replace the 8ch to condense the amount of belts Yamaha has produced. The 98 did go to the 8dn belt.
