I hate to say it but I am torn between buying two different sleds, 2002 Viper or 2003 Polaris 800X. I like both but the Polaris I belive has a better ride. Any thoughts, I really want to stay with Yamaha Allan

Both nice sleds. I am wary of the big block poo motors as I have witnessed the crank snap right off at the secondary. Not a pretty sight. To mke it worse Polaris would not even help him with any of the repairs. My Viper has been very relaible and a blast to ride. Good luck.

stay with Yamaha and get the Viper, install the rear suspension out of a Polaris into the viper, and then have THE perfect sled. Not to mention the killer looks and that amazing sound of a triple! The reliability for Polaris is not good, as the most reliable polaris would be the fanners (340-550) IMO, but hey, its your choice, I'm only stating my opinion...
The polaris 800 had problems with the exhaust valves breaking and falling into the cylinders. They make a titanium valve to correct the problem, other than that they seem to be good sled.I bought a 02 polaris 700 new and it has been very reliable.I also own a 02 viper and have minor problems but nothing major. The edge suspension works better in the rough but the viper is smoother running and quicker.

do not buy a poo 800 twin they are slow as crapy you will be very disipointed the xc 600 are faster, I would buy a 700xcsp better motor and alot faster. Viper will always be faster. I wouldnt say that polaris is not reliable our 02 600 with m10 is great just add gas and go, never done anything but change bearings and it has 8000miles

I had a relative that shares our shop that bought a 2002 Poo Edge 800SP (blue w/ the yellow stripes). Yes it rode and handled good but it was a toilet against my 2002 Viper. He tried everything he could without modding the motor or exhaust and he could not touch the Viper. Believe me, he had connections with factory Polaris people too so I know he was getting the good stuff for it. All of his previous Polaris sleds were fast. Needless to say he got rid of the thing. I have heard directly from Polaris employees that their 800 was a piece of junk. The 700 was a much better running motor.

Well I'm sorry if I offended any Polaris owners by saying that they are not reliable, but form what I have seen and heard Polaris is not as good a Yamaha except in suspension, needless to say I had an old 1994 Indy Trail Deluxe 488, it didn't have any major problems except that the crank bearings were kinda bad but used it for 4 years like that until we sold it for $1000. It did have a lot of km's on it, and the speedo read close to 12000 I believe and it hadn't worked in years
Personally I'd go with the Viper but its your money, get what you think will be the best choice.

Well we are going to the auction tomorrow and hopefully will be coming back with a Viper. I am going to limit my cost to 2,500 as we will also have to pay the 10% commision and 6% sales tax. this would make the maximun cost of 2,900. I really do not believe the Viper is worth that though. I am going to check and see if the exhaust is stock and whether or not it has studs. I guess we'll see. I will post what the outcome is.
Just back from the auction, bought an 02 Viper for $1,950. Runs great just needs a little polishing. The speedo say's 596 miles but the machine shows more, not sure if the gauge was replaced. Very happy Al

good choice made there, if it does only have 600 miles it may have been not maintained 100%, but with a little work/time/money anything can look like new, and will lasta long time, there was a viper on here this past winter with 30000kms on it, or around 20000 miles I think? Either way it was high up there.
Everything under the hood looks new, the seat looks new, the chassie looks new, but he track looks 10 years old and worn. Do you think the original owner swapped tracks before sending to auction? I am going to replace the track with a 1 1/4" Ripsaw

Spend a couple of extra bucks and get a ice ripper - and be sure to remove the tunnel protectors when you have the skid and track out - it's a lot easier that way.alswagg said:Everything under the hood looks new, the seat looks new, the chassie looks new, but he track looks 10 years old and worn. Thats a sign of a good chance that the previous owner swapped out tracks, maybe to use on a sled he is keeping that had a track in not so great shape, so his sled he is using has a good track...
Thats the sled, There were two Vipers at the auction, the other had over 9,000 miles and ran only on 2 cyl. It brought 1,500. It may have only had a fouled plug, as the compression was good. The 800 X polaris we were looking at went for 2,800 but was is very good condition, only problem was it was piped and we don't need any loud sleds were we ride. Al
