What is the difference between a Phazer and a Phazer II

wider front end on the II and they went to a 121 track rather than the 116. That was the big difference. After that it's just updates depending on the year.

Some additional Phazer II differences

All above correct as mentioned AND, the 96 & newer Phazer II got a wider ski stance than the 1st Phazer II. I have a 90, 93,94 & a 96 & the 96 has the wider ski stance similar to the 93 Exciter II SX. I was surprised to find this when I got the 96 home this summer. Wanted to use the strut cans on the 93, no can do as they are "spaced out" for the wider stance. I measured the ski stance & yep, almost 2" wider.

I am not sure what year they increased the 2nd widerstance

Maybe 95 ??

And yes, the 96 is bone stock. So, for the Phazer II's, there is wide & then Wider ski stance...LOL !! ;)!

There also were some minor clutch improvements from the 84-86 versions.

AND, if swapping motors, the electrical pig tail at the base of the motor has a different plug starting in the 94 chassis. Found this the hard way too a few years back when doing a transplant of a 94 motor into a 93 chassis. It required some "re-wiring" to get pig tails to match!! :o|

I think 1990 was the first Phazer II, I also think there was a change to the clutch in 1992 as they use a wider belt than a 1991.

I do think it was '96,because my '94 and a buds '95 look the same but the '96 was a wide SOB.

Are they the same engine

OK, thanks for the info about the track length and everything else. Are the engines all the same, except for the wiring harnesses?

More changes for 1996:

New VX secondary clutch - I do not know what was different about it.
Carb air jets were made replaceable for tuning purposes.
The long track model had ski skins and a belly pan protector added and the rear track suspension mounting bracket was longer with an added mounting hole for deep snow performance.

96 & newer Secondary clutch differences

The secondary clutch on the 96 is more tunable & set up more like the rest of the Yammies. External type helix so you can change the spring settings or the helix very easily like the other models.

I have the 1996 Yamaha brochure that has the Vmax 600XT (TSS Model) on the cover and in the back list all the specifications and it shows the Phazer at 38.6" which is wider than the 1990 Phazer II's 36.2 what confused me is if you look at Yamahas on line Parts manual or the Brochure the first year it lists the Phazer as an SS is 1997 ?

The Phazer SS designation did not have to do with the wider stance, it was just a new name that started in 1997. The wider stance did start in 1996.

Two more things I thought of on the II -
The brake actuating mechanism was new and improved.
The brake disc was larger.

hey chuck, I just picked up this phazer for $200, has no ownership , but the serial starts with a 89F looks like a 93? anyone chim in here on what year this could be?

Here is a neat serial/vin number link. http://www.vintagevmax.com/sled_serial_numbers.html
