Hey Guys...

I picked this machine up 2 months back ...and have cleaned it inside and out...Last night I was looking at the carbs and leaned on the belt and noticed
the engine moved slightly...Upon further inspection...I noticed if I put my
hand under the primary and lift with 3 fingers the engine will move 1/2".
Literally I can wiggle it...is this normal?..the mounts "seem" fine..every thing is torqued down...the machine was only used for ice fishing (7000km) and no horsing around on it...
I'm used to my viper specs...so unsure if a little play is normal..

I'll post a video shortly to show what I mean..

cheers

The mount brackets between the frame and engine do break. Look at them closely while moving the engine. You may also have loose attaching hardware.

As PZ 1 said and I have seen the engine case broken on the left front mount a couple of times. I have also seen the welded nuts on the frame mounts crack loose.

It should not have the play you are describing.

Okay...thanks guys..I was gunna post a video but was under the weather the last few days..I'll look into this...

I think I have a bunch of phazer mounts, if you need some I will be happy to send them your way.....No charge of course.... ;)!

Thanks Nicko...Haven't bin able to get back to the garage lately...noticed a bolt on the clutch side seemed loose so I need to grab a primary puller first and retighten and see from there..also noticed my engine also wants to stall out after being warmed up...Gunna throw a full/fresh tank of gas in here first and take it from there..
I'll let you know if the Mounts are truly useless shortly..

cheers and thanks

Mine does the same thing. I didn't worry about it. Beat the hell out of it all last year and the motor didn't fall out, so I figure it's good enough.

If I have to pull it out, I may be PMing Nicko, though.

Sleeper Dave...I wish I could say the same...I do have a fall back sled...but this one is for guest, the wife and most of all my dad for ice fishing...I'd hate to have him blow a belt at night in -20 temps...yeeesh...besides..I like to tinker...just got power into my garage now...so bring on the low temps...hehehehehe...
But in a wierd way...these things do seem bullet prove eh?...nice work yamaha...

If you torque the engine by grabbing the clutch it will move some but it should'nt be loose. Check for broken mounts or even broken aluminum on the casing or you will be blowing belts left and right. I broke 2 out of 3 mounts on mine, and some of the casing on the front left side of the block over the years.

I played with mine a bit tonight - the rear of the engine will move up and down about 2". It won't move side to side. The belt is due for replacement but I put a couple hundred miles on it like that last year and didn't have a problem. Not with the belt at least.

Your rear mount has got to be broken.

And when a mount is replaced the pulley alignment and distance will have to be set.

Yup. Looked closer and that's exactly what it is. Motor doesn't move side to side, belt alignment doesn't seem to be an issue. The belt should actually hold the motor down in back when i'm on the throttle. Looks like the rubber is separated on the rear mount, front 2 look good (at least it looks like there's 2 and they look good).

I'm going with the "don't fix what ain't broken" method on this bit for now. It looks to be too much of a pain to fix, considering it doesn't seem to really be affecting anything.

I noticed the bolt on my front left casing is loose(feels)..only thing is I need
to get the clutch removed to retighten or inspect a lil better...I'll let you know...
Thanks guys for all your input...I didn't realize this thread would even have "Ding's"
attention...NICE!!! hehehe

It is not that hard to fix it, just don't do it outside at night in 11 F weather with strong winds, like the last one I did. That was not one of my greater ideas.

I would fix it. It will twist to the side under load and ultimately cause the other ones to break.

Listen to this advise!!!!

Broken parts don't fix themselves. They only get worse and they can take out more unbroken parts in the process. Neglecting issues like this now while it's in the warm shop could have you cussing yourself out on a cold trail in the middle of the night.

Your choice.

Good Luck,

Same here, I would definitely replace the mount. It's one part you dont want to be riding for too long when it's broken. The other mounts will break, then blow the belt. Or they could work loose and break chunks off the crank case. Look how close the oil lines are to that rear mount.

Sooo.... the rear mount is no longer available from Yamaha.

Any other suggestions?

I PM'd Nicko, he mentioned earlier in the thread that he might have some available.

I suppose I could pull it out and try gluing it together. But that's probably as valuable as not touching it.
