hi everyone this forum is sooo helpful, before i even ask im going to say any help from you guys is greatky appriciated..
i have an 01 srx with a few problems i think is the voltage regulator... when i bought the sled on of the headlight bulbs was plugged in not both, on was unplugged, so what happens is when i plug both in the lights are very dimmm the dash shuts off etc..then i unplug one headlamp again and all is well... so im thinking voltage regulator.... anyone else have any expirience with something like this ?
also i need a headlight housing for my srx dual healight... the top mounting tab is broken... anyone know where i can get one at a resonable price or does anyone have one please ?

Before you go further I would try a little trouble shooting:
1-unplug the wire that is plugged in, then plug in the other one [that was left unplugged]...does the light + dash light still go dim? If so its sounds like a wiring harness issue...
2-swap the bulbs that are plugged in as well to see if there is any difference
3-check the complete wiring harness for a rub through[search forum for info on this]
4-with both lights plugged in, unplug the hand grips to see if it still has the problem
5-at this point try swapping voltage regulators.
if this does not fix the problem it may start getting expensive
6-check the stator to ensure proper resistance[search forum again for info]

don't know if this is possible but.... could the previous owner have put in a stator from a 98-99, say his let go, found one cheap, not sure if there are any physical differences that would make this impossible

Or maybe it has a 1998 or 1999 bottom end or complete engine in it!!??
The older stator/electrical system does not have enough output to handle the 2000 up power demands...2 headlights ect.

no i know him heres more info he did something with the bars stretched the grip warmer wires , grounded them on the handlebar clamps made a short from my exp with motorcycles that alone will blow the regulator to protect the stator thats how they are desingned... i already checked the harness swapped plaugs etc etc and nothing changes and the harness is good ... any thoughts still?

i know its the original motor does anyone know how to check the stator output? what it should put out at idle and what it should top out at ? if its not the regulator its gotta be the stator any advice from someone with exp. would be greatly appriciated im going nuts with this thing thanks

If i were in this boat. I would put a current clamp arount the stator output and see how many amps are being put out and go from there. You could have a bad voltage reg, bad stator or semi short (large draw of current) pulling the system down. If all was stock and not screwed with like in your case i would jump to a weak stator but you may have other issues with the hokey wireing you have found from the old owner.

check out this thread about 3/4 down first page he has all the spec ranges with the wire colors listed, hope it helps, use your search tool on here you'll find answers to anything http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?t=63223&highlight=srx+stator+test

Does the problem follow only one of the two headlights? If so, perhaps one of the two filiments within the suspect bulb is shorted?

ya now i got a few things to check im sitting here looking at my sld and the lights in the headight are some blue xenon bulbs that i guess he tried to put in ... maybe the bulbs are bad or they draw more than stock!!

Start with the simple stuff. Never rode with those type of bulbs but I know they're annoying when they're coming at you.
May want to swap to standard bulbs as a test and keep the fancy ones for spares.

Good luck with the trouble-shooting.
Let me know if you end up needing a voltage regulator. I have one that I bought for my '01 SRX but did not end up needing.
