Well, I have the old SXR 700 apart changing the track and of course the speedo key (or "Joint" as Yamaha calls it) is stuck in the drive shaft.

Heated it up, penetrating oil etc. etc. etc. .... broke it off (Argh!!!!)

Try drilling it out, pick it out etc. etc. .... Go to bed. Get up....

Managed to break three or four bits off drilling it "partly" out. Those speedo wires are hard!!! Picked out broken drill bits etc. etc. etc.

Find out from local Yamaha guru that the insert in the end of the drive shaft is actually replaceable!! That's interesting!!!

Get advice from local Yamaha dealership: Drill out and tap 6 mm, use 6 mm bolt and slide hammer. Hmm....might work.

Drill out as far as possible, tap (carefully), eventually grind tap off so I can tap further. So far so good....

Take out slide hammer, thread in bolt, One, two three, Out comes insert!!! The choir sings!!!! Len rejoices!!!! Len taps in new insert. Quits for the day (while ahead!!!).

Now I just have to see if I have an antifreeze leak is from the front heat exchanger (from broken track with studs, don't stand behind machine with track running, YIKES) or if it's from the overflow bottle which emptied when I tipped the machine on the side to pull the skidout, or from the pump seal (hope not), or maybe just a weak hose clamp (hope, hope). Sigh! Have to pull the carbs off at least to see. Don't want to go to all the effort of putting a new track on and then find that I need to change the front exchanger.

Lesson here: All of the above, is way better than work at the office!!

Cheers,

Len
