Hello fellow Yammi experts...
It's my first post, but I've read through some pages in this forum and have amassed some critical questions about the sled I'm looking at tonight. I would really appreciate some timely responses... (my sincerest thanks in advance!!!)
1999 V-MAX SX600 Triple - single pipe - red heads (+ 2-up seat.... yes, on a SX chassis!).
~2180 original miles (no rebuilds)
Good overall condition (however, I'll let you be the judge of that!)
~US$1400
Here are some pics
QUESTIONS:
1. Regarding the W-link (upon harsh bottom-outs): What crack's am I looking for? Where do I look?
2. I've read that the wiring harness which runs under the motor can fray - where do I look for it?
3. Am I looking for about 125psi compression? (How much should the cold vs. hot readings differ?)
4. It has a 2-up seat (with heated rear grips) - however, it's an SX chassis - can the rear suspension handle it? (my girlfriend weighs ~130lbs)
5. I understand it's rating at ~95hp (single pipe, non power valve motor) - however, is it a reliable mill?
6. Since there were crank issues in the 1998 Yammi's (and on some 1999 models) - is there any way to check besides calling a dealer and checking the VIN?
......let me know if I missed anything.
Thank you very much, in advance,
Michael

I'll give you the only advice that I can unfortunately it has nothing to do with the sled. I wouldn't let your girlfriend know your posting her weight on a forum full of guys.

It has nothing to do with how much she weighs. she can weigh 95 and want to weigh 90. Either way I'm sure you'd be dead if she finds out.

First Yamaha I ever owned a few years ago. Great sled, ez to do maintainence and simple mods to make it better ( contol rods, reed spacers, clutch kit) or leave it stock. Bullet proof reliability if in good shape! Check out the compression and if regular maintainence. If all checks out, a good purchase at around $1500-1700.

I will never claim to be a Yammi expert, but I have been married for 18 years.
There are two things that absolutly do not go together. That is..........
Discussing your woman and her weight in public.
Check the entire w arm for stress fractures and cracks.
Pretty hard to check the wire harness for rub through with out removing it.
Yammi tripples are bullet proof, someone else will need to chime it about the crank issues.

I wouldn't worry about the wiring harness on the red heads. The sx chassis just has less travel, but would still handle the 2-up, might have to adjust the rear suspension stiffer. The thing is the suspension will feel pretty stiff when you are riding by yourself, if set-up properly for the 2-up. As far a the crank issue, it was more an issue with the '97 700 red head crank bearings, but was fixed by '98. $1400 sounds like a pretty fair price.

OK, I just looked over the pics. If I came across that sled, YOU would miss on good deal. Looks nice!

Went to see in person last night, I didn't buy it. Compression was a touch low 110, however even across the board. In addition, the exhaust gasket was blown - spent oil pouring down the front side of the block. Also, there was moist spotting on the base gasket - towards the front of the motor.
Also, price was non negotiable - C$2000 (~US$1900).
