My dad has a 2000 sx-r 600 and for some reason the speedometer just stopped working. i can move it with a screw driver and i tracked all the wires back so i have no clue....any ideas? thanks
speedo drive key probably broke. good indication the drive shaft bearing is not too far behind.

follow the cable down under the secondary clutch, were the cable screws in, you have to remove that piece its held by three bolts, the key is behind there along with the bearing, its best to loosen the track first though

Like the others said you most likely have a broken speedo cable key. Finding the key is not the hard part. Getting the piece that is broken off out of the drive axel is. The key most likely broke because of water that gets trapped between the bearing and bearing cover or speedo cable drive which then causes everything to rust. This also causes that bearing to wear out as well. The key is actuall in and insert that can be removed from the drive axel. The key and insert are inexpensive but most times the drive axel has to come out of the sled to get the insert out. Do a search on the TY site for drive key or speedo key and you will find many posts about how to get them out. If you can get the broken part of the key out of the insert easily take a good look at the insert to be sure that it still has the square shape of the key. If it does not, then the new key will not work with the insert. At that point you could use JB Weld to secure the key to the insert but if it breaks again you are going to have a hell of a time gettting the key out. The other thing that might have caused the key to break is a failure of the speedo cable drive. After you remove it, check to make sure it spins freely. If not, you may need a new one or take yours apart and inspect it, clean it and lube it.
After you get everything repaired heres what you need to do to keep the water out of that area. Drill a hole in the bearing cover and screw in a grease zerk. After you put everything back together pump the cavity full of grease to keep the water out of the cavity. Pump the cavity full a couple times each riding season and after everytime you wash the sled or put it in storage and this problem won't come back. I did this to my '99 SX after having the same problem and I have not had the key brake or the bearing fail in over 6,000 miles.
