Hello all..I have a 1989 Ovation 340 cc fan cooled and had problems with this sled. Did a compression check and one cylinder was bad, removed the heads and cylinders and couldn't get the piston off on the rod closest to the clutch (the cylinder getting the warmer air). I was finally able to get the piston off with the help of a hack saw and the pin itself is mashed where the roller bearings ride. They were all jacked up. After inspecting things, I noticed that the crankshaft counter weights almost appear to be bronze/brass color. Seems that puppy got hot...REAL HOT!!! I talked with a fella locally who does honing/boring and mentioned it to him. He seems to think the whole crank should come out and replace all the needle bearings etc. I think right now I am looking close to $300 just for new pistons, rings, gaskets, pins ,bearings etc. And I know that these sleds can be had for around $900 to $1200 for an even newer model than mine. Other than the discoloration, everything else seems ok, I think. Was wondering if I should just put new pistons/rings, etc and leave the rest, or scrap the thing for parts? I sure can't see dumping $800-$900 to do the whole motor and then I still have a 1989 sled. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. BTW, this sled has had some serious miles on it, and this is the first failure I have ever had with it. I bought it new so I guess I can't complain about the relability too much, its towed many other sleds out of the woods, and I won't mention brands, but none begin with the letter Y! LOL :P

I asked this question a year or so ago right here on TY. My 2001 SXR-700 has blue/brass colored crank ends also. I thought, dam something is wrong. But I was told here by many people that it's norman and part of the mfg. process. Yours overheated or melted so you might hav a different problem. I am just saying in my case I had the same condition you are talking about and it's normal. You should still persue whatever course of action you need to I am no expert, I can just state my facts of my motor. Doug

pin

If the pin is mashed where the roller brg rides I think you will have a rod issue. What happens to the pin happens to the rod too unless we are talking about different things.

Thank you all for the advice, I did have a reputable person check it and he says I am lucky, there is no damage to the rod or the part where the needle bearings ride on the pin. I am having the cylinders bored .020 over and I'll repost when I get it back together...thanks again..

Dave
