Anyone know much about a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 600? Looks like a carbed model. Found one with low miles, fairly cheap, anyone know of any problems with it?

they're junk. water pump seals like to go out and then coolant gets into the engine oil and to change the water pump seals on that motor, the whole engine comes out of the chassis and has to get torn all the way down....splitting the case halfs. big job. run far and fast from that atv....i don't care how cheap it is. stick w/yamaha and honda atvs. kawasaki atvs aren't that bad either.

That's why I asked, thanks for the advice. Cheap and a good value are two different things that is for sure.

that polaris sportsman you were looking at, didn't happen to have blue plastic did it?

No, this one is green only 790 miles on it. Looking for a friend in Canada. Going to maybe bring one up with us. His budget is only $3000, if you spend $4000 seems like you can get a lot better bike. Sportsmans are easier to find. What years did they get the problems straightened out?
we had and have polaris quads in our fleet of work bikes and let me tell you they're no grizzlies thats for sure. We sold the 600 twin we had, gutless is all can say but had a nice ride and still have A 04 500ho and a 05 500ho but looking to sell the 05 just not the work bike the grizzlie are. the Grizz can tow a ton of bait which the Polaris bike had to do at 10MPH in low gear as the grizz in high gear at 30-40mph on our trails the only downside to the grizzly is the dam axles keep popin out, but stay away from the polaris bikes if your going to do any heavy hauling just my $.02

i forgot to mention that the intakes boots like to tear often and exhaust donuts like to go bye bye. polaris atvs are just junk....plain and simple. my buddies '05 grizzly never had the axles pop out. he has a ITP big tire kit on it too. love that machine.

Polaris atv's are pure garbage, have no balls for the size they are, one buddy has a 2008 Outlander 400 and other buddy has 2008 sportsman 500, and the Outlander will waste the Sportsman in every way possible. More power, will easily out-pull the sportsman, but the polaris has the better ride, with everything they make, good suspensions and thats it. ThatsSportsman has only 700 kms on it and is already having problems, my Suzuki 300 King-Quad 300 is a 1991 and will go places the sportsman won't go, and has 11000 trouble free kms, except for the Universal Joints, they are famous for breaking in the old Suzukis. Man I love showing off with my little 300, has Diff Lock and Super Low, crawls through ANYTHING I point it at, except for deep mudding, because my tires are sh!t. Tell your Buddy to get a Yamaha or Honda, I like the new Suzuki's to...

I have a Scrambler 500 1998 Model and 600 Grizzly could not come close to catching me. Grizzly was new and mine was 2 years old.9 years later I have replaced the brakes the belt and the starter because my son thought it was a submarine. My 98 Trailblazer just broke a bearing cage and took out the piston. My son beat the crap out of it for 10 years. I dont think they are quite that bad. Not trying to start anything. I ride Yamaha sleds .
We have a 99 Sportsman 335, plain and simple our next one will probably be a Honda. Lets see we've had clutch problems, and clutch problems. You get the picture.

i sure hope your 500cc 2-stroke scrambler would take a 600 4-stroke grizzly!! the scrambler is a 2-stroke for petes sake. it may have been faster, but it will never be more reliable, or get thru more, or pull more than the grandpa grizz.

Not sure if it's still true, but I remember reading something about the weight differences between the domestics vs. off shore brands. Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha had self imposed weight restrictions (500# max I beleive) to keep shipping costs down. I understand Polaris and Cat were the heaviest by far but not sure if this is still true.
An extra 100# makes a big difference when it comes to getting it out of a jam.
My buddy has a Honda 300 ('97 I think) that has been nearly bullet proof.

I have a 98 Sporty 500 that ate the center lobe off the cam... Not sure why, always had good oil. I would never buy one again. Honda 4 trax 350 from 1986 is still whoopin that polaris's butt... But compared to our 08 Rhino 700efi , i would take the Rhino anyday....

I do believe also that most of those poo 600's didn't have a pull start. So if your battery went you were S.O.L.

500 is the 4stroke, 400 is the two stroke.

I have to agree with Mopar on this, the scrambler IS faster, no doubt, but thats the only place IMO where it beats a grizzly 600, the new Grizzly 700, well, thats a whole different animal...mopar1rules said:i sure hope your 500cc 2-stroke scrambler would take a 600 4-stroke grizzly!! the scrambler is a 2-stroke for petes sake. it may have been faster, but it will never be more reliable, or get thru more, or pull more than the grandpa grizz.
