How do I change the oil in the chaincase on a 2002 viper er? I can't get the chain case cover off, is there a trick to it? I have reverse aswell so maybe there is more to it than other sleds I have done? I took all the bolts for the cover off but its not loose??

if just changing the oil there is no need to remove cover if you lay on the groung there is a drain bolt in the back of the case ,,,next to the drive clogs ....10 mm bolt

I wanted to check the chain adjustment aswell and clean the case out. I just bought the sled and it seems the last owner never did much maintanace on the chain case the oil look horrible when I pulled the dip stick.
I cant find any drain plug on the bottom anyhow.

Really there is no drain plug, I have looked. And what I really need to know is how to remove the cover. Even the yamaha manual that was e-mailed to me does not give enough info to remove cover. I think that I need a manual for the viper ER model as I have reverse and its a whole different case. Can anyone with a viper that has reverse give me some advise.
by the way my case looks much like the case in your first picture.

The other side of the chaincase looks like the second pic There is a 10 mm bolt up under your tunnel ahead of your right footwell It pokes through the side of your heat exchanger
Ok I found the drain now!! thanks guys! Still need to figure out how to remove cover so I can adjust the chain.

Have you got the cover to move at all. Sometimes it takes a little persuasion to get it to move. All yamaha sleds have the drain plug. Maxdlx

the first pic is a viper case with reverse .... remove the 4 case cover bolts ...and the bolt in the pic with screwdriver ...and wiggle the case cover or use a screw driver to pry gently open ....the tip of the jackshaft is a tight fit into the bearing on the cover

If you have removed all four outside edge cover bolts, plus the reverse shaft bolt in the picture above, you will likely have to wiggle the cover off the two dowels located near the bottom left and top right bolt holes.
Good luck!
thanks ya*ma*a*head and everyone else for walking me thru this I got the case off!!

its on the inside of the tunnel...12mm i believe. look from clutch side across and you'll see it
So I removed everything but one of the bolts which holds the chaincase to the tunnel is stripped in an turn the bolt both ways but I can't pull it out to be able to remove my Trak. If anyone has an idea I would be very great full.

the bolt head is stripped or its just spinning and not moving? if it's spinning but not moving, they have square nuts tacked to a plate that is riveted to the tunnel. if this is whats happening I'd guess the tacks broke. have somone hold the nut in the tunnel while you turn out the bolt.
