i was thinkg about putting new rings in my 2000 srx 700. i have been doing abit of asphalt drags with it. i was wondering about shaving some off of the heads. the sled got about 145psi for compress now. did now how much to take off the heads. or what the stock thickness of the heads are. just looking for alittle more power. and what compression is safe to run without hurting to much.

Srx only came from the factory with 135-140 psi So Im guessin that there was already some taken off your heads!383stroker said:i was thinkg about putting new rings in my 2000 srx 700. i have been doing abit of asphalt drags with it. i was wondering about shaving some off of the heads. the sled got about 145psi for compress now. did now how much to take off the heads. or what the stock thickness of the heads are. just looking for alittle more power. and what compression is safe to run without hurting to much.

gauges can vary you need to measure your squish, there was a post on how to do it just a few weeks backs, can't remember all the details, try a search

Take a piece of solder wire and bend it so its long enough to reach the cylinder wall from the spark plug hole, turn over youe engine so piston comes TDC Remove solder and measure Squish!staggs65 said:gauges can vary you need to measure your squish, there was a post on how to do it just a few weeks backs, can't remember all the details, try a search

I wouldn't throw any more compression on it, I would suggest trail porting, just as reliable as stock and up the fun factor about 12-15hp.

a lot of people think its all about just upping the compression.....well there's more to it than just that. some other things you need to worry about are...trapped compression ratio, squish clearance, squish band angle, squish band width, "dome" shape and depth, and squish velocity. those will all vary upon the rpm the engine is run at, the distance the engine is run, what the engine is built for, how advanced the timing is, what fuel is going to be used...etc, just to name a few. i would surely get that thing ported and then get the heads setup to match the new porting.
if you check your squish clearance w/the solder, we can then tell you how much your heads have been flat cut already. do you know if any previous work was done on the heads?......like squish band change, dome profile change, etc.

i bought the sled two years ago. don't think there has been to much done to it. i have done anything with it performance wise. just talk to a couple of guys and said when i was putting new rings in it i should get the heads shaved. i have been doing the 1/4 mile with it in the summer. and want to trail ride it in the winter.

I think 145psi cranking compression is more than enough. with those #'s the rings are most likely fine also.

i got around to checking the squish. it measures at 0.060". what would be stock squish on a 2000 srx 700. and what would be the tights you could go?

Your asking a question that will bring many opinions. The answers are all well intended but much more info is required. An engine builder will first ask about your access to performance fuel, how much power you are trying to build, how much the budget will allow and so on. Call a Engine builder who can suggest a package. Remember if you work the heads it may not be trail friendly - you may need to run better fuel, change jetting, change clutching, its a package of changes all at once.
