I just put the new engine in the 87 phazer and I kept the carbs from the original engine. When I pull the rope to start the engine after a couple pulls fuel begins to pour out of the exhaust manifold and out of what looks like an overflow on the side of the main carb. There is way too much fuel going into the carbs...

When I got it started a couple times it would start to rev extremely high and fuel would be flowing out of that overflow...how many turns out should the 2 main jet screws be out?? How about the idle screw?

I tried playing with the screws but nothing was working... :o|

I did not even touch them, so what should I do just unscrew them and put them back in or what?

To get to the needle and seat you'll have to pull the carbs and take off the bowls. Floats are attached to the needle.

As for the air screw, start at about 1.5 turns out and fine tune it from there.

Should not need new needle and seat. A piece of dirt must have got stuck in the valve and blocked it open. The mixture screws (they are fuel adjustment screws) are for idle speed mixture. There is no high speed or main adjustment screw.

Start by whacking the bowls with a wrench or screwdriver. Sometimes that will knock the needle loose and fix the problem.

But you will probably have to take them apart. Inspect the needle and seat, that'll tell you if you need a new one.

Take the carbs out, and clean them. They are full of crude. And inspect the needle valves.

Cleaned the carbs of by friends 84 Phazer last night. The pin that holds the float, on one of the carbs, was partially slid out. Some how it became dislodged. He was having the same flooding problem. I have no clue how this even ran at all. Tons of varnish and crud. Lots of little tiny passages to clean. Patience, Carb Cleaner, a little bit of stranded wire, & compressed air and she runs like a champ. New engine with unclean carbs? Shame on you! LOL!

haha i am having a ton of trouble with these stupid carbs! i tried taking those screws out that you have to take the bowls off to get too, and they just started to strip out, I'm pretty sure they are not coming out anymore lol.

i tried cleaning all the little holes and passageways so many times, now I'm just sick of it.

I don't know what to do.

Does anyone have a set of carbs for sale??, i want to start fresh.

I got mine fixed up by running wire (individual strands pulled from a stranded copper electrical wire) through the air passages, then using high pressure air to blow them out. The passages that were gunked were the ones that ran from the front (intake) of the carb to the bowl in the plugged holes. I believe these air passages help to aerate the fuel and increase pressure in the carb bowl, causing more fuel to be drawn through the venturi. Seemed to fix the problem - this after i'd been through the carbs a dozen times.

I had one of the jets that you describe strip out. The head, at least. I wouldn't worry about it - you can get it cleaned out fairly well without removing it, and it doesn't need to be removed to change jet sizes. The regular jets all came our fairly easily.
