I have been reading through some very old posts about people gutting their Silencer in place of buying an aftermarket one, now me being a guy that races cars and builds them really has to wonder how you can gut this can and not have some horrid sounding exhaust note or worse a lot of leaks.
All I can come up with in my own head after looking at the stock can, is cutting it open, removing the guts, and then welding it back up, now I am a good welder, but anything exhaust with heat really needs to be Tig welded for a proper seal, and this would cost just about as much as an after market one anyway.
I only thought about doing this because my can already has pin holes and is leaking, so I figured i wasn't going to hurt a good can anyway. And if I did I would just buy an aftermarket one, which I probably will for the weight savings and the few ponies.
But I would like to know how people do this and what gains, losses etc they got from it.
Thanks

Do a search, its as easy as putting a 2 inch hole saw on a 12 inch extension up through the exhaust hole. Add reed spacers and you have a quick 3-5hp maybe more.

Correct, you are just bypassing the baffle plate to create a freeer flowing exhaust, and with a 2" hole they don't sound bad at all. I bet 60+ percent of everyone has done this mod... to the opint it is hard to find a stocker without the mod done. Easy quick HP gain. (and free)

I haven't done it. Mostly because as I've read on this forum it is debated whether or not there is any gains. I don't want to do it just to make my sled louder.

Do the exhaust mod, reed spacers, head gasket and you have a completely different machine at very little cost, maybe $50 for the cost of used reed spacers.
I have a bored stocker and enjoy the tone, it's really not that much louder, just throatier and raspier. Sounds nice personally though I think, Im sure others would agree. I have a sno stuff can too that currently is on it. That is however, pretty stinkin loud but not too obnoxious, at least not to me. I ride with a buncha s***ty kitties that are all rockin triple pipes and stingers so I may not be a good judge there...

Already did the spacers , just was really wondering if this was worth it or not. I still would prefer and aftermarket pipe, due to the fact mine already has pin holes in it. But What Silencer and Pipe to get, seems no one has any used ones for sale, unless you own a SRX. No love for the Max

Ok, now you brought up a real question, now per say you omited the silencer all together and ran mandrel pipe from the stock muffler out, would this be a better way since you are pretty much gutting the stock silencer anyway? Or would this be crazy loud.
I had twin Race pipes on my old sled and my head was ringing after long trail rides, but I still loved it.
Also by doing the mandrel pipe, would this really screw up the jetting?

You are not gutting the stock silencer, just cutting a two inch hole in the bottom baffel. What do you mean "say you omited the silencer all together" and "ran mandrel pipe from the stock muffler" The silencer is the muffler. Do you mean, replace the silencer (muffler) with a straight pipe off of the exhaust pipe? To answer your question, NO this would not be a better way, and YES, it would be crazy loud, NO it wouldn't screw up your jetting but your gas mileage and power will be non existent.
