I have a 97 XTC that runs great on the trail but off trail powder riding the sled mid-range looses power. I have re-jetted and put a smaller head gasket on and new skis on with very little change.

I am not an expert in any means but I think I have heard this before. On our older Yamaha sleds (Early Exciters then Phazers then Exciters) the Manual mentioned for powder riding a change was needed in the secondary. I no longer have the Exciter's manual but I think that is where you should focus your attention.
Good all around sled otherwise. I sure like mine. What ski's did you end up with?

Tighten the secondary spring 10 or 20 degrees.

Shoeman, add the sx/mm cold air kit (4 pods drilled into the dash) and tape off the under hood intake. Your single biggest problem off trail is that the exhaust is getting forced back under the hood.
