Vin # on sled without title or registration?

I picked up what I bielieve is a 1997 Mountain Max 600 sled. I bought it as a parts sled, engine was blown up. Owner had no title info and tunnel has been painted... All i can find on the right of the tunnel is 8DA-000440 Is this just a serial number or is this actually the vin? I thought the vin needed like 17 characters? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So the 8DA-000440 is all there is to the Vin on this sled? Anyone know what year and model this is by that vin?

the 8 DA defines the year ,,,and model i belive call a dealer and ask or someone will chime in on this one

8DA is a 97 VX600XTC EA. the EA is for standard equipment electric start.

Should I be able to use that 8DA-000440 VIN to register the sled then ?

thats the id numbers our state requires for titlleing and tags. make, model, color and vin.
