I starting setting up the belt deflection on my 99 sx 700 and I couldn't get the belt to sit high enough on the secondary clutch. The manual specifies the belt to be 1.5 mm above the sheaves to 0.5 mm below. I can get the belt to sit 0.3 mm below if I remove the adjustment screws and let the secondary completely close. I have a clutch alignment tool and my clutches appear to be aligned just fine. Also the c to c distance is about 10 5/8". My belt is not new but it measures 34.3 mm wide and new is 34.5 mm (8DN). Am I missing something here, can this be corrected with a new belt or do I need to loosen the engine mounts and increase the center to center?
I have a picture of my clutch alignment tool just for clarification:

Please disregard what I said about the center to center distance. This will not affect how high the belt sits in the secondary. It only depends on the width of the belt and the distance between the sheaves. So it looks like I may have to get a new belt, but is that extra 0.3 mm going to make a difference?

maybe you have the wrong belt to begin with..have you checked that first. My belt is worn down slightly more after a season, but still in spec.Yet my belt rides properly on the secondary clutch. My track also spins by itself when track raised off the ground.Make sure you are using OEM belt to begin with.OEM belts are tough and last a long time also.Maybe get yourself a better clutch center to center tool, the one that slides onto the jackshaft end where the 2ndary mounts.

The belt I am using is part # 8DN-17641-00-00, I believe this is the stock belt for this sled. I was going to get that clutch tool but it was $160, this one was $20. But that shouldn't make a difference to how high the belt sits.

depends how accurate the $20 tool works. The other one is really precise.
I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it, unless your looking for every last bit for racing purposes.
