can u install an aftermarket tether and where would it be tied in? where can i purchase?

Yep i sell them They dont make a direct plug in one for Yamaha but they are easy to install.I splice into kill switch under handle bar pad.And mount near your grip warmer knob on left dash area.

is it a normally open or normally closed switch?

i would think normally open so that when the tether is pulled it closes grounding out
