Hi guys,

I need a kick in the *** in two different directions, I am restoring my ol'95 VMax 600, but this year I am at a stand still with it, I am kinda, meh, on the project right now. I just do not have the ambition to finish it yet. So, I am thinking about a newer sled, and I have found one.

I have found a 2007 Apex RTX with a smidge over 15,000KM on it was owned by a mechanic and has had all of the updates done on it. It will come with a seat jack as well for my son. The dealer wants 6500cdn for it. I think this is a fair price, the machine is real clean and has been well taken care of, and well ridden as you can tell by the mileage.

Here are the questions, how much compression should be on each cylinder hot and cold? Should I worry about the timing chain at this mileage? When do I re-valve it and re-ring it? Any tell tale signs I should look for regarding a 4 strokers wear and tear? other then lots of blue smoke of course.

So, do I get kicked in the butt and start motoring on my old max and save some coin, or do I get kicked in the butt for passing on a great machine? I am kinda horny for the new sled, I have been telling myself the next machine I buy will be a cat, but I can not ignore the reliability of the yammies. I figure this machine would be for touring, and I can buy old 440 snopro for fun.

Thoughts?

I don't think that is to bad of a price for a nice sled, dont worry about re-ringing a four stroke, its basically the same motor as in an R1, the Genesis Extreme 4 Cylinder motor, so you wouldn't re-ring a crotch rocket every 15000 kms would you! Plus it takes 20 hours of work just to remove the motor, then stripping it down and putting it back together again. If maintenance was kept perfect, I wouldn't hesitate on that, even considering the KM's. These sled can be VERY fun to ride to, the power and torque these motors put out is arm-stretching, I'm talking about 0-100km/h in a matter of seconds. I wouldn't buy a Cat, but they're better than Poo ;) I've read somewhere that the 4 cylinders should have around 180 PSI per cylinder, but I'd check the 4 stroke side to make sure.

IMO, I don't think you could go wrong with the 4 stroke ;)!

NADA lists the sled for $7400 I say its a good buy.

I wouldnt unless your going to boost the motor

Valves need adjustment at 20,000 miles or 32,000 kms Rings I haven't heard anyone doing just rings except for the 03 RX-1's. Hondo on the 4 stroke side has 40,000+ miles on his sled and has done nothing to the moter except for valve ajustments and oil changes.

Added bonus you dont smell like 2 stroke when you get home from a good days riding

you will love it just for the fuel milage, nevermind the torque. i went from a 01 sx500r to my 05 war. night and day difference but i mainly did it for the fuel milage. 8mpg when you are hanging with tripples gets expensive at the end of the day.
