changing from stanard to synthetic oil

Hey everyone I did a search but just could not find exactly what I was looking for. I want to change from the oil that I am using to a synthetic. what do I have to do to achieve this. Can I just drain what oil is in the resevoir and fill with the new oil? or do I have to drain the complete system? What effects will it have etc?
 
done the synthetic change many times and i waited till oil was very low and i tried to do the change in warmer temps rather than really cold temps, never had a problem..

My learned fellow TY'er, Mr. Staggs, is once again 100% in charge on this one.

The one thing you should know about mixing conventional and synthetic oils is that it may cause a sudden but severe explosion spontaneously. No one knows why ......

according to my amsoil dealor here let it get low and top it up with syn i always sucked it out with a suction gun always leaving a bit in bottom so the pump wont get air then fill it with ams ive had no trouble but each to there own
 
Thanks for the input. I thought you could but just wanted to oget other opinions first. I will have to watch for the spontanious combustion though lol.
