Electrical Question

I want to install a 12 volt cigar adapter on my dash for my gps, but i have a question as to where to tap in to get 12 volts for my power source. Looking at previous threads it looks like people have tapped the condenser circuits for power. looking at the schematic in my manual, it looks like the condensers and the ypvs test connector are on the same circuit from the magneto, (i have a 2001 srx 700) would i be ok to tap the ypvs test connector for my power source? has anyone tried this? i think it would be better than trying to cut into the existing wires when i can pin the dummy side of the ypvs test connector, leaving the factory harness undamaged? any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

I hard wired my GPS to the blue/green and black wires at the six way connector going to the speedo adding an inline fuse on the B+ side. I released the pins from the hardshell and soldered two new tag ends to which I soldered the fuse link and ground. I bought two cables and cut the cigar end off of one and use the complete cable in the truck.

I mounted mine in front of/in between the gauges keeping it low and out of harms-way in the event of a roll over. I thought about mounting it on the bar pad (my buddy did this on his ski-doo and it turned out good), but was a little concerned about wire chaffing/fatigue going to the bar plus there was less wiring with it mounted on the hood. Also thought about biffing the unit with my face so I went with the same location I had on my Polaris.

I haven't looked at the scematic and when I asked the same basic question of my moronic dealer, all I got was "whatcha wanta do that fer". So I just sought out 12V, engine running, closest to where I was mounting it and that's were I found it.

I can include unit voltage on my GPS display which lets me know I'm not running on the batteries (useful when using the cigar plug as these are proned to intermittent connections).

Sorry for the long winded reply. To answer your question; as long as you have 12ishV and a ground, why not?

thanks snomofo! i work on cars all day, and one thing i see different is that with a car/truck they actually give you a little extra in the wiring harness to make repairs or what not. on my bike and snowmobile the harness is just long enough to reach components and nothing more. probably why rub through is such a big issue. lucking i did some digging, and found that in my connector pins i had some sumitomo pins that look to be an exact match to what was used in the ypvs connector, so i just wired the dummy plug with my accessory wires. makes for a clean install no cutting of the factory harness! so far as mounting, i have the low windshield like most people, but i was thinking about keeping it tucked away in handlebar bag for easy access.
