I got a SS440 I'm working on. Thing is a mess, been sitting behind a barn for 2 years. Just starting pulling carb and cleaning it up to try and fire it. I suspect mice have been in airbox. How does it come out. I unbolted steering column and doesn't come forward enough for it to come out. Does the seat and gas tank need to come off so it can slide out from the back?
If its this much of a pain is it worth throwing a k&n on there??

It has been awhile but I think you do have to take the
seat and gas tank off too get the air box out.

I own an SS. I would take the seat off and see if it will wiggle lose.

Yep seat and tank out and it popped right out. What a dumb way to have to take an airbox out. Oh well....

Well sled is all back together with the exception of the carb. It is completely frozen think I need a used replacement.
I will say it was worth while to pull seat and tank to pull airbox. This allowed me to clean out tank, remove mouse nest from under seat, fix chewed wires from mice, paint rusting gas tank bracket, replace all fuel lines, and give it a general clean up. Just seemed like a crappy task when everything was dirty and every screw fought me cause of rust. Replaced all screws and cleaned up and went back together slick!

Yeah those damn mice love the oldies. Thats the thing with them though (old yamahas), they are a blast to ride but they suck when it comes to maintaining them because everything is crammed it there.
