I recently picked up a 97 vmax 500 xtc for my son. I have retro'd the skis with Viper plastics and dually runners, sent shocks to Pioneer for revalving, and added a 2" bar riser. The sled handles surprisingly well, darting virtually eliminated. The problem is the power in the mid range, its running rich. I've done some reading thru the forum and can't really find any info on the needle jet settings. It sounds like i need to lower the needle to lean out the mid range..? Has anyone had this issue? Any help would be appreciated.

where are needles now stock position(2)? yea you could drop a clip ,stock specs are in tech section.

sure it's running rich, killed engine and pulled plugs wile in mid??

I think the needles are set in the stock positions. When i bought it it had 900 miles on it. The guy i bought it from said that he had not done anything to it including greasing it!
I have not read the plugs. The sled spits and sputters while running trail speeds (40-60mph). It takes 5/8-3/4 throttle to keep that speed, it uses a ton of gas and oil, what a pig. There is good power at wide open throttle.

yea they loved gas, read plugs in the range your crusing in and drop needles should help, clean carbs too.

i'll give it a try, thanks for the advice!
I see your from Bad Axe, I grew up in Kinde/Port Austin on a dairy farm. I ride with another guy from the thumb (Peck). Always nice to hear from a fellow thumbilly. haha I still make it up there once a year to hunt the elusive whitetail.

Daman, Are there any other mods that you can advise for waking the vmax 500 up?
Well there's the HG mod,reed spacers,and clutch it to run 7800 WOT(check tech there's a 500cc set up from viperjohn that's killer)

myself i wouldn't do the hg mod because after that you should run premium fuel because of the added comp and today's gas just sucks hard telling what your getting anymore.

focus on clutching and jetting right now get er dialed in and go from there, you'll be happy with that clutch set up,she'll pull good!!!

running rich

had the same problem with my 96 vmax 600 so after some
trial and error I managed to lower the main needle and lean
out the mid range. What a difference in performance. like a
new machine.
