IT WORKS!!!! .....passenger heated grips + heated vest + 12v DC plug

So, I mounted a 2-up seat off a Venture + backrest and hand holds.

The seat has a harness in the rear for OEM heated grips. However, at $250 for the whole kit, I opted for a DIY kit ($35).

The kit I bought included two elements which wrap around the passenger handholds. A Hi/Lo switch is also included - with an in-line resistor. Everything tuck's neatly away under the seat. The heated vest is spliced into the same Blue wire powering the heated grips.

Tap into the Blue wire for AC power and use any bare metal on the sled as a negative point.


As per the 12v DC outlet - tap into the brown wire behind the headlight. Use any bare metal on the chassis as a ground.

I drilled a large hole next to the driver heated grip thermostat and mounted the plug. This allows me to run a short wire into my GPS device.
 
Man u r pullen allot of voltage there any lighting issues? dim lights? sled missing or runnning bad? what sled?

1998 Vmax 700.

The GPS uses only 3v - so I have no worries about that.

The motor was designed to support two set's of heated grips (same magneto as a Venture). So there shouldn't be any problem there.

Alas, the worry is how much juice the heated vest will use. Then again, I don't use the high-beam when I have a passenger (it shoot's too high)... so maybe running the rear grips on low whilst having the vest turned on won't be a problem?!

In any case, I've spliced fuses into the wires leading to the heated vest + GPS.

No I was just wondering if you had any issues for someone else reading this post,just seems like allot when all are in use.

No issues yet, but I've yet to test it on the trail!

At idle, the headlight and tail light were running as per normal while the front and rear heated grips + GPS were running. Alas, this was expected - as a Venture would pass the same test without a hiccup.

The real test will be when I power up the heated vest - however, I will have my passenger flip the switch once we're under way - also - turning it off before we stop. I can't foresee there being a lack of power via the magneto once at cruising speed (~4000RPM's)
 
Having run the sled extensively this past week, I can tell you that the heated vest draws so much power - to the point where the headlight is rendered useless. Alas, I was also running the front and rear heated grips on HIGH + GPS (at ~3volts).

...so, I stand corrected.... the magneto does not pump out enough power for all the accessories to run at the same time. I figure I would have to forgo using the rear heated grips if I want to get anything out of the vest.
 
Thanks for the update,,was afraid of that, that vest im sure has a high demand,probably would give the newer 300w stator issues too.

how many watts is that vest?
 
Its NOT the voltage thats the problem,,, its the CURRENT, measured in AMPERAGE or wattage if you prefer to do the math... You say 300 watts.. there is a simple way to figure out how much amperage or wattage you need for a given resistance and a given voltage.. Do a search under OHM'S LAW and it will tell you what your power requirements are... Then,, get a STATOR (or CHARGING/LIGHTING COIL) to supply you with the needed POWER... There are even ELECTRIC MOTOR REBUILDERS than can REWIRE or RECONSTRUCT your stator to beef it up to run a BUNCH of things.... It's called REWINDING.... They can ADD WINDINGS and make that STATOR work like MAD!!!
 
Well, at least you got handwarmers on the passengers end that work well.

I still am hunting for the right combo to make that happen. I have 3 tricks to try first. Last time I checked my magneto's output it was in spec.

Looks like I have a line on a set of yamaha handwarmer gauntlets. I also got a tall windshield that I put on what was supposed to be the last weekend of riding last winter. That should work a lot better than the low screen that was on it, that folded over at anything over about 45mph.

I am going to figure it out, if it kills me. :o|
 
Not sure on the 2 strokes but on the 4 strokes guys that splices power from the handgrips for anything causes the CPU to fail in the long run. The best option has been direct to battery in front (with fuse) or brake light in the back.
