I'm setting up my rear suspension in my 99sx after installing long travel viper shocks and I'm looking for the spring lengths. Right now I have the limiter straps set at 15mm above the nut, center shock spring is about 195mm and the rear is about 375mm. (measured after lifting the rear of the sled and setting it down gently) When I sit on the sled, I have about equal spacing of the transfer rods(15mm top and bottom with my bender rods at 3.5 lines out) Also I weigh about 180 pounds. I'm not sure what the spring length should be on the viper shocks and want to make sure that I'm close. Are the viper rear springs the same length as the sxr rear springs? So if anyone has these shocks (in a viper or long traveled sled) and wouldn't mind measuring their spring the way I did and letting me know what you have it would be a great help.
Hey Mr Sled, have you ever thought about a suspension set up page like the clutch tuning page?

Yes the springs are set at the same specs.Theres two ways you can measure the preload. The free length with the shocks out of the sled is 203mm-223mm for the center and 358.5mm-378.5mm for the rear.Or you can measure the installed length from the center of top mounting bolt to the top of the spring. Those specs are 96.8mm-76.8mm for the center spring and 80.3mm-60.3mm for the rear spring. The limiter straps will affect your measurement on your center spring if you are trying to measure the spring. If you measure from the top of spring to center of mounting bolt i bet your in spec.Did you change limiter straps?

I went and measured the installed length, center is about 81mm, rear is only about 55mm. The full rate ajduster is in the middle. should I raise it up to make the shock softer and then tighten the spring to get it closer to 80.3mm-60.3mm ? The limter straps were changed to ones that are 1" longer.

Does not matter when checking the installed height.Your not measuring the length of the spring.Your measuring from the center of top mounting bolt to the top of of the spring. If you got your owners manual look in there it will show you how to measure them.Or go to http://www.yamaha-motor.com and look under parts and service. You can view owners manuals there. If you changed to long travel limiter straps they should be set to 25mm.

Center spring is pretty close to the middle.Maybe loosen it up some if it feels stiff. The rear you will probuly have to tighten up some.

So if I loosen the center and tighten the rear, how will that affect the spacing of the transfer rods? If I don't have enough set in, should I move the full rate adjuster?
