I have been having some trouble with my sons 2001 Polaris XCF fan with two carbs. It takes off good but then falls on its face and wont get up to speed. I have put in some seafoam took the bowls off and cleaned the main jet and the bowls there was green stuff in the bowls but not too bad. I also put a new set of plugs in as well. Where do I start to look? Oh yea the compression check is 95 lbs on both sides. It seems to be starving for fuel.

Be sure that the carbs are clean, needles sound ok, but make sure pilot and mains are clear. Make sure the tank is venting properly as well. The other thing that comes to mind is clutching. Be sure belt is in good condition and clutches are clean and in working order. If is is shifting to fast it will cause the sled to bog and fall on its face. Post as much info as you can on the sled for others to analize and offer their .02

I took the bowls off and cleaned them and the jet that the needle goes into. Ran no different still bogs when power is demanded like it is starving for fuel with new plugs as well. The cluthing is stock and the odd time that it takes off and goes hard from a dead start it goes to 70 mph with me on it 240 lbs. When I back off and try to take off again on a rolling start it it falls on its face.

Clutches can be stock, but worn out or dirty. How many miles are on the sled? When did this problem start occuring?

I had both clutches looked at and set to stock. Maybe stock is not the right thing as this sled was built for racing and it is used for trail now. Its a 2001 XCF SP fan cooled 440.

Does it do it when it is warm you might want to check the fan out. I had a phazer that would do that and ended in blowing a piston. The fan let go. Just an idea.

You will need to soak the carbs in a little can of special carb cleaner...

What would conern me..it has 2 carbs...one may be not working...may not be that problem

Its hard to give an answer without seeing it.

The green stuff...is a good clue.

Did you take the pilot jets out and look at them?

No I did not but I am thinking I will do that today. It seems to me to be starving for fuel or maybe too much fuel. I found a fuel leak on one line to the mag side carb, fixed it and I thought that was the problem. A buddy of mine who works on sleds for a living said to take it out with the air box off for a quick rip to see if its running to rich. The plugs were black when I changed them and put new ones in so he is thinking it is running to rich plus the fact that it went through lots of fuel, but it had a fuel leak as well too which is fixed now.

x2 on recleaning the carbs, u have to clean out all the circuits real good not just the bowls, also the float needle, seat, and passage, also make sure float height is right

Well looks like it is worse than I thought. The pistons on top are pitted with holes and the exhaust is cut away on both pistons. I am surprized it had 95 and 90 psi on each side. The holes are not all the way through the pistons but close.

Bought a brand new motor for it and it is running like a top again. Thanks for all your help.
