I have a chance to buy a low mileage '99 Phazer that appears to be in excellent condition for $1500. I believe it would be a good starter sled for my 12 year old, but would appreciate any feedback on this model. Any known issues? Thanks
That is a great sled for a kid. I upgraded my daughter to a 200 Phazer last year and she loves it. She was 14 and has been riding a full size sled since she was 10.
I don't know of any problems with the sled,I would put some plastic skis on it. I put some of of a 05 Warrior and it handles great.
Good luck.

Thanks. Fortunately, the sled does have plastic skis on it already.

I have a 99 they ran fat and fouled plug quick with stock carb set up. Couple quick change and they ran great. Very comfy easy to turn BUT I'd Shorten up the throttle cables to slow it down these sleds are quick! My 110lb wife will run almost 80mph on it way fast for a kid IMHO

Go for it, they are reliable and can take a beating, I know from experience My Mountain Lite in stock form could run 125-130 km/h on speedo, its basically the same sled with a longer track. Theres 12000 kms on mine and no rebuilds, still going good and strong. For a fanner they will impress you I think, my buddies with 6-800's thought it was pretty fast for a fanner. Like I said, these are tough sleds and they look awesome to.

I loved mine until it gernaded. Broke the piston skirt and bent the rod and wasted the cylinder. I have had no luck finding a cylinder and have since found these have problems with the pistons. Good luck with yours. Mine had 3000 miles on it when it blew. No apparent damage from wear or low oil. Not sure what happened.

I have seen/read a lot more T.A. Phazers with engine issues then I did with the older TSS Phazers engine.

srvfan,
What type of carb mods did you do to yours? I have a 2001 Phazer deluxe and have read where guys have rejetted them but was not able to determine what jets they changed. I'm also uncertain if they were rejetting because they installed an aftermarket exhaust or was just trying to improve gas mileage/performance of the sled. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

OK thanks daman, I was worried for a minute, but I never had any troubles with mine, except for chaincase/driveshaft bearings at around 10.5 thousand kms.

buy it and go through it before it's put into service, clean carbs check settings jetting etc, check oil pump setting, idle grease etc,etc.bravo-guy said:OK thanks daman, I was worried for a minute, but I never had any troubles with mine, except for chaincase/driveshaft bearings at around 10.5 thousand kms.

Isolated issue ?? What planet are you from ? Try and find a cylinder or a motor for the new style phazer, they are not avaliable. The motors are way different than the old style and do have problems with the piston skirts breaking. Do you have one, have you ever touched one ? I loved the light weight and handling and the motor was plenty strong until it sneezed. I had no issues with it until it died. The venture had the same power plant and Yamaha discontinued them in 01 for unknown reasons. I really believed I had a true phazer motor until I went looking for parts. Found guys in the mountain states that had the same issues. The ring pin was still intact and the lower end is beautiful, with the exception of the bent rod. I am still on the lookout for a cylinder, Millinium does not even cary these or have a part number that crosses. Isolated my butt !

I know people who have put 20000 kms PLUS on these 99-01 motors with NO troubles, not even doing the rings. I'm not saying anything against you, but your telling me that basically my motor is no good and it will blow up just for no reason at all.

those are wicked sleds...I run with a guy who has one with over 15000kms and the engine is solid!! He beats the piss out of it too, and is always running with 600 and 700cc sleds and you know what... In the trails and twisties, he's always right with us, no probs...they also fly really well..not that you r kids should do that
can't go wrong for that kind of money, you'll have a fun, useable sled for a long time!!

Dont get me wrong, I love the sled and it rocked. I really wonder what went wrong with mine and would love to rebuild it. I am sure there are many sleds out there still running and great at that, all things aside they are a great sled. I just had a bad moment. I am really looking at installing a SRV 540 in it. Will inform when done.

I guess it was just one of those sleds that blow up for no reason at all, it happens every now and then no matter what brand.
Oh and on1_wheel, I know what you mean, I can keep up with my buddies all day long except for top speed runs, and they ride 6-800's, and they do jump well
