I have a 1997 Sx700 (roughly 4,000 miles) snowmobile with some issues. Last year a friend was riding it wide-open across a lake and he said he heard and felt a clunk and it died instantly. We tried restarting it but I couldn't pull the starter rope at all. We got it back to the trailer and once at home i took the cylinder head off thinking it might be a piston but i could manually cycle the pistons. I've got no clue what to even look for or do so I'm just wondering what your thoughts are. Any insight is appreciated.

so you can turn motor by hand? easy? how do piston tops look? cylinder walls? if ok could be bearing on crank? could be loose stator and flywheel jambed?could be starter jambed? need more info
Same thing happened to mine. Full throttle run down the lake and the motor stopped. Check things out and couldn't get it started. Five mintues later of fooling around with plugs, cdi and whatever I could do it ran again. That lasted about 50 miles and then the mag side bearing on the crank completely packed it in and took the cylinder with it.
