I'm having trouble with my Yamaha exciter, i bought it off my friend for 100 dollars because he blew it up, i cleaned it all up replaced the piston, got it running nice, then it started backfiring and bogging out allot which it always did but i dealt with it, and now i cant get it to go higher than 4000 rpms, i cleaned the carbs when i got it, took it apart today and cleaned it all and made sure my carbs were in sync put it together put new plugs in it and it ran great for about half an hour and then fouled out and started backfiring, i then had my friends uncle help me clean out the carbs more and adjusted the air screw to 1 and 3/4 turns out because were not sure what it should be, can anyone help with my problem or help me to figure out how to sync my choke cable and know what all my carb adjustments should be at? thanks a ton... i can be either replied on this or emailed at minilogo1@yahoo.com
Thanks,
Justin

My chokes were acting up. I adjusted a 100 different times. Still problems! Ended up backing way off and using a primer. Problems are finally gone in my case. Don't know if this will help you but worked in my case.

ith as safety switches which im assuming were the elctrical connections that were taken off, i beleive i know how to adjust the choke, my friends uncle told me to put the plunger in as far as it goes and tighten it up untill the nut sits right on top loosely...

ok so i had the carbs cleaned out and i set the air/fuel mixture screw to 5/8th of a turn out as i found in the tech support on this site, adjusted the throttle by making sure both the plungers were even with the top of the carb on the air box side, should the plunger be flush with the engine side of the carb? and how do i adjust the choke on it? i have my choke set way off and just pull the choke cable up a ton to choke it, and hooked everything up and it ran pretty nice, stoped backfiring but was running at about 3500 rpms, i set the idle screw at 3 turns out(i dont know proper placement), and now it just bog's out at all times, does anyone know the proper adjustments for this sled? i need a ton of help we are supposed to have a lot of snow tomorrow and i'm about to take it to a pro and pay out my a$$ with money i don't have to get it fixed so someone please help me! thanks

When you say cleaned the carbs, did you totally disassemble and clean? Makes all the difference in the world.

yeah i had a buddy of mines uncle help me, we pulled the jets out, needle, cleaned the holes all out nice and good, made sure everything was working ok, but still nothing, i think its my air/fuel mixture screw i have it a 5/8th of a turn out but im not sure if it needs to be more or not, the site said 5/8th of a turn but i think its got to be different because 5/8ths of a turn sounds weird...what is your screw set at on yours? that might help me allot... thanks.

turn the screw out more, Sounds like you have the carbs clean, try turning the fuel screw 1.25 or 1.5 turns out. Wait until sled is fully warmed up before you try and set the idle.
make sure your throttle cable is not to tight, a little slack is good.

ok so far i have set the air mixture screw somewhere in between 1 1/4th and 1 1/2, and it seemed to run a bit better, i swapped out my br10s i had in it for my br9s, it ran a bit better but sounded like it was skipping, so i got a set of br8s and ran those and it ran great(is it dangerous to run 8's?), but still had some problems, i grabbed the choke cable for one of the carbs and pulled on the cable closest to the carb to pull the plunger to see what it does, it did nothing, so i pulled the other side and it stalled out, im assuming the one that did nothing was binding up somewhere? so i took the cable off of it and just put the plunger in with the nut to hold it closed at all times, and it ran a bit better, then i adjusted my carbs more and the side with the cable still there was burning nice and brown bot the other side was burning black, im going to swap out the other side and make it permanently closed and install a primer. any more help or tips would be greatly appreciated, i also need a new recoil if anyone's got one cheapest i found was 20 dollars so far. thanks

my thoughts your doing to many things at once. put the recommended plugs back in the sled make sure your jets are the ones that came stock with sled unless there were pipes put on ect. If i remember one year of the exciters there were carb problems with jets or something? someone else might want to chime in on that. good luck and start from scratch again i know its a pain but your changing to many things at once.

it runs great right now, i got good mid range and good top end, its just my low end is still a little boggy, so im just going to get rid of the other choke, and put a primer on it and see what that does, i think im running like 1/8th of a turn too rich...

oh, im hoping ot goes better than it has so far, second day i broke my handle bars, 3rd day i rolled it right atfer my friend almost rolled his, 4th day i sunk it in 3 feet of water because my low end wouldent allow me to cut across a huge puddle... and now im trying to fix that problem... but you have a good riding year also and be safe.
