My buddy's exciter has a bog at low rpm under 5000 above 5000 runs great. the clutch engages at 3200 which seems low. i have cleaned the carbs twice now. idles great. to take off you have to ease into the throttle, if you mash the throttle, it just boggs. once the engine gets past 5000 it runs great. i have replaced both needle and seats also. I would like to get it running better for him before he rides with us again. help Al

sounds like it coming alive once on the main jets, check your pilot jets and needle settings, look up in the tech section what the stock settings are and go from there

pilots are clean, not sure if they are original, but I can check. the engagement seems really low to me also. I plan on opening up the carbs again. Al

The gearing on that slead is high. you need the belt to sit flush on the secondary at minimum. It is critical that you have the clutches properly aligned. That motor is a torque monster and I'm sure the rubber engine mounts are weak by now. A torque strap would help the belt life and acceleration. Make sure you have at least 12 lbs pull on the secondary spring. Given it's age you will probably have to preload it a bit more to get that.
Put a new primary spring in the clutch as unlike the secondary you can not adjust the tension on it. A 4200 rpm engagement is best, but your primary spring choice will effect your shift speed. You have to make both work together.

My 1991 was doing that Kinda. after cleaning the carbs and Checking pilot screws at 1.5 turns out I took both choke cable plungers out it I could make it accelerat real fast. So after further investagation I realized one of the chokes were sticking. After cleaning and lubercating I reasembled. It fixed the problem.

I replaced the primary spring and tightened up the secondary, now engagement is around 4,500, take off is much better. It still has a problem backshifting properly. I am convinced the whole problem is in the clutching. Now not much snow to test in. He did get a chance to ride though. Al
