Last weekend I was riding my 2003 Yamaha SXViper when all of a sudden my seedo went dead, I also lost power (warmth) to my heaters and on top of that I lost my top end as if my power valves weren't working. Two things came to mind when this happened first, that there was a loose wire somewhere on the wire harnest so i checked all the wires and still nothing worked. My second thought was the magneto quit on me, this however could still be the problem but the weird thing was that once my sled cools down and i fire it up everything WORKS until I start riding 2 feet, and after that everything dies on me again.

Please help me with any advice at all.

Can this be the Magneto going bad or is it something else?

wow...I can't wait to hear what this probloem is. Sounds like something overheating that send power to accessories.

i had the stator go in a 97 sx i used to have it was kind of intermittent like that but in that case was more of an issue starting. sometimes it would run great, others be a little underpowered and misfiring, but watch where you left it, cause after i shut it off it may not start back up. no expert but sounds like it could be a cdi box to me, good luck.

check for a rub through like on the SRX's have under the motor. it might be shorting out where you cant see the wire

the stater is bad. when its cold the oms are strong but get it hot! it gets week.thats pretty common when cold to hot!

rub through

I also belive in a rub through of the wires under engine. An easy way to check this is to take away the white relay, if it then works it´s a rub through. Had that problem on my -01 SRX.

stator

Next thing to check: A friend of mine had a viper with the same problems and it was the soldering between the wire harshness and the stator that was bad.

If you take out the white relay you only have power to the ignition system, everything else is cut off. I´m not 100% sure but this is what I understand.

My bet is stator. I've already replaced mine, at around 2000 miles. There has been a rash of them the last couple of years. Usually symptoms are the dash pod goes out/resets when hitting the brake, or switching between high/low beam. My hand grip warmers also quit working, and I had a bog in the mid range while the warmers were turned on. When I shut them off, the bog went away. The low voltage is affecting the cdi and causing the bog.

relay

Is that model fitted with a relay that dedicates all power for starting and when the engine starts this relay then turns on the headlights and accessories. If this relay fails could be your problem , does your headlights work ?

check

Check your Dealer or someone on this site for the location of this light relay and check it out. I had mine replaced under Warranty so I have no knowledge where it is. Mine was intermittant accy and headlights.

relays

Come to think of it there is 2 relays by your left knee and I think its one of them.
Another question is did this sled originally come with a battery or an ER Viper because all sorts of Magic happens if you take the battery out and run it. Lack of Smoothing coils with ER
