I inhereted a 1999 Yamaha Vmax 600 Sx with almost 9000 miles on it. It is an awsome sled, I love every part of it except for the rear suspension. I came from riding Arctic Cats with 13.5 inches of rear suspension to 8 inches or what ever it has. Is it possible to swap out the Yamaha rear skid and install a skid out of a Cat. I know that the holes would have redrilled and reinforced. What I dont know is if the tunnels are the same width or how bad the handling will get (it turns like its on rails right now).
Or should I quit daydreaming and just fix the sloppyness and soft suspension that is has.

I installed a 00 Cat skid in my 04 Viper. Theres a link below in my signature. Id say deffinitly do it, but you will have to do something to the front suspension to offset the extra hieght of the new rear suspension.I believe A set of Viper front shocks will bolt right in.

yep it is possible and its a pretty common mod. i considered a cat skid in my SRX but decided on an IQ skid instead

was that a sno-pro/ ZR skid? I have a ZL skid that has longer springs on it and I think the front arm is a different length. But its definatly doable
It was actually a ZRT skid,(I used my 00 Sno-Pro for the dimensions) but if you check a ZL and see if the center to center mounting bolt dimension is the same as mine, you could still use my mounting locations. If not, you may have follow what I did, but substitute the ZL dimensions. They will be close.

the 33 3/8 measurement is to find out where to drill the rear mount holes? Do you just push the front arms in and drill them at the center line of the drive shaft then? Just trying to see what I am getting my self into

I put a polaris pro-x skid under my sx (97 700) and absolutely love it. I waited to swap out the fronts with viper shocks and wish I would have done it sooner...totally new ride with a decent setup like that. If you go polaris, jbshocks.com has a lot of measurements, otherwise you just need the measurements from the donor sled your swapping the skid from. For reinforcement in the front, I made two plates out of 3/16" steel and welded the stock old yamaha mount plates on top...it ended up being a snug but perfect fit. The rear holes fell right on the old reinforcement plate, so I just drilled new holes.
no, the front hole location is offset from the center line. use the line as a reference and measure from it. never use a loose suspention to figure out monting locations, because most suspentions are somewhat compressed when they are installedIgoFast said:

I also have a ZL skid I picked up but looking at the two neat to each other it looks like the rail tips are going to hit the drivers or stab the track. When i line them side by side with the rear axles lined up the ZL rails are about 3 1/2" longer & have less of a curve at the front. anybody else have this problem or am i seeing it wrong???
Are you comparing the ZL skid to another Cat Skid, or the Yami Skid? If you are comparing it to the Yami Skid, remember that it is not going to be positioned exactly the same when it is mounted. I do believe my cat skid rails are closer to the axle drivers then my Yami skid was, but is the same as my 00 Cat SnoPro.
Im not positive that the ZL skid will have the same mounting points as a ZR/ZRT skid, but most likely if it is different, you can reposition the swingarms in the rails to make it the same. Or you can get the mounting hole diminsions from a ZL sled.
